A beautiful Three S acoustic came in the shop for some work. These were manufactured by Suzuki Musical Instruments in the 70s. This one has almost never been played and was in "as new" condition. It's unusual to see these in good shape. Most 40 year old Japanese guitars need a neck reset. However, this one was perfect. Unfortunately the bridge had lifted, so I sorted it out with a bridge re-glue and replaced all the perished plastics with bone.

After some much needed TLC, it now sounds incredible.

Holly, the loyal shop dog passed away on Wednesday aged 15 years and 3 months.

Holly has met and demanded cuddles from almost all my customers, with some customers even bringing her treats or their own dogs along to meet her when they came past.

She kept me company in the shop every day. Its not going to be the same without her sitting under the bench while I work.

RIP Holly.

Just some fun things from the workshop.

This mixes shellac in just over a day. Without a mixer it takes 3 to 4 days.

Shellac has been used for hundreds of years on furniture and instruments. All those beautiful antiques you see, use this finish. Its favoured on classical instruments because it's so thin that it imparts very little influence on the wood vibrations on acoustic instruments unlike poly or epoxy finishes.

A beautiful 61 Gibson Reissue. This is insanely beautiful and warm. If you look closely you'll see this one is fitted with Nylon saddles which give it a noticeably warmer tone compared to most SGs ive played.

Epiphone Explorer fitted with a bone nut, all new V.I.P pots and Gibson pickups. It doesn't try to melt your face, It succeeds effortlessly. Explorers have to be one one of the best standing guitars out there. They balance well and they look cool AF.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year. 2025 has been a wild ride. Lost feeling in my hands legs and jaw, lost my central vision and have been on a recovery journey for majority of this year. Thankfully i have restored majority ot my feeling and functionality. Hopefully more improvements to come. Many or you were incredibly kind and thoughtful and I appreciate you all.

This almost completely original Hofner has lived a hard life. The neck shows signs of a break. At one point somebody use a polyurethane glue to join the heel back to the body leading to some rather unpleasant squeeze out. I was able to remove the worst of it. Can't be undone now but it doesn't change the fact that this guitar is quite amazing.

It has incredible projection acoustically.

The original pickup was quite literally falling apart. We were able to track down an original Hofner pickup in the UK. It sounds very sweet.

The neck has more in common with a baseball bat than most modern guitars... It's so thick it takes getting used to. But it's actually very comfortable for playing chords.

Gibson and fender get a lot of credit for their place in rock and roll. However Hofner is a bit of an unsung hero. While early telecasters and strats are fetching eye watering money in even poor condition. These old Hofners can be had for not much money at all.

Buddy Holly played a Hofner, the Beatles etc. these guitars are just as important.

It was lovely having this come into the shop. I only wish my Jazz Chops were good enough to do it justice.
