AUMS Adelaide University Mathematics Society

AUMS Adelaide University Mathematics Society The Adelaide University Mathematics Society The Adelaide University Mathematics Society (AUMS) is one of the biggest clubs on campus.

While our society is mathematical by name, we are in no way exclusive, anybody can join. Each year we run BBQ’s which are free for members and act as a great way for students to socialise. We also have a pub crawl every year which is always accompanied by a great shirt design at an affordable price. Above all, AUMS is committed to promoting a sense of community amongst those studying mathematics (and the staff that teach them), both at a social level and an academic level. An excellent example of our efforts toward this goal is the ‘Maths Meet and Greet’, an event for students and staff where games, food and drink are provided (for free of course). Also, we welcome suggestions from students and staff for events and activities that they would enjoy or find useful. For our most curious members, the AUMS constitution can be accessed using this link:

This April, Jane Street is bringing Portal, an immersive program, to Sydney, Australia. We invite university students in Australia and New Zealand to participate in this multi-day event, designed to provide a deeper understanding of our work as a quantitative trading firm. Selected participants will engage in strategic games, technical activities, and insightful talks that showcase the analytical and problem-solving skills we use in trading and technology.

Participants will arrive in Sydney on the evening of Thursday, 9 April, and can depart either on the evening of Sunday, 12 April, or anytime on Monday, 13 April. Jane Street will provide all travel to and from Sydney, as well as meals, accommodations, and social events.

Portal has two different program tracks students can apply for:

Trading & Research — Students will learn about mathematical and financial topics such as probability, market structure, and arbitrage through a combination of short lectures, group games, and mock trading sessions.

Software Engineering — Students will learn about the concepts, tools, and skills that we use in our everyday work through talks and hands-on activities. Working together with full-time Jane Street developers, they'll build experience with programming fundamentals, software design principles, and development practices that are used throughout the industry.

Our programs provide valuable opportunities to explore the technical aspects of quantitative trading and software engineering. Students who participate in our Portal program gain practical skills and knowledge, and participating students will be prioritized in our internship interview process. No prior knowledge of finance is required—just an interest in discovering what a career in trading and software engineering at Jane Street could look like.
