🍻 Oktoberfest is here at Brightstar!
As part of German Week, we’re celebrating Oktoberfest from 12pm today, with a full line-up of German-inspired activities, food and b**r - check out the full line up via the link below.
But why do we celebrate Oktoberfest in September? 🤔
Oktoberfest began on 12 October 1810, as a public wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to a huge celebration on a meadow outside the city gates, which was named Theresienwiese (“Therese’s Meadow”) in honour of the princess — and is still the name of the festival grounds today.
Small food and drink booths began appearing at the festival in 1818, eventually growing into the enormous b**r halls and celebrations we know today.
And yes, the name can be a little confusing! The festival was moved forward into September to take advantage of the warmer weather, but it traditionally still concludes on the first Sunday in October.
