2016 started in Sri Lanka in winter. Island in summer. We harvested amazing grapes. Bought our first electric car. I had some family help in the cellar. And a great pop up in our newly renovated Stammhaus. It ended in Berlin at the cordobar.

We are thrilled to invite you to “Wild Swines – Fine Wines of Middle & South Burgenland”, an exclusive pre-Karakterre gathering on Friday, May 16th, the day before Karakterre 2025. This is a great opportunity to connect, share our wines, and celebrate together before the big event.

Event Details:
📍 Neckenmarkt – Sippin’ Up in the Vineyards (Kolfok, Stefan Wellanschitz’ vineyard hut)
🕒 3-6 PM – Wine tasting with winemakers from Mittel- & Südburgenland
🕕 6-8 PM – Open tasting for all winemakers participating in Karakterre (Bring your bottles, let’s taste together!) so taste wine from friends with friends.

🕗 8 PM till late – Afterparty with live music, DJ set, natural wines & Super Cattivo

The soil under the vines has not been tilled for about 20 years. In this vineyard the rows are too narrow to use a machine, and even the horse refused. We might have to hoe it by hand again. These 70-year-old vines definitely couldn’t withstand this dry season. Another option I’m considering is using sheep’s wool as mulch. We’ll rethink things in the winter and come up with a plan. Farming is always about adaptation. Instead of waiting, we must keep moving forward and find a solution.

“Morning of day 2 of the harvest. Feels good! Here, we’re harvesting Kékburgundi grapes for Franz plays. This year, I’m trying something new and will be making grape juice from Cab S. 😍 We will also collect some raisins and try to make a dessert wine. ‘Sweet dreams are made of grapes” 🙌

This is a Wimperfledermaus aka Geoffroy’s bat. Since over 15 years there are 1400 of them in our barn. They only stay over the summer in the winter the leave to a warmer place. It is the biggest colony of westhungary. Sometimes at night when the go out the amount of them is a bit scary. But are happy that they keep the population of flies and spiders down. So we are proud and hope that they will stay here for the next 15 years 😍
