Ever heard of “The Mixologist Club,”?

They were an elite guild of the finest Black bartenders in Washington, DC.

Founded by R. R. Bowie and J. Burke Edelin in 1898, it was a marquee professional association, a gathering place for African Americans who had found an unlikely foothold in the upward social mobility of professional bartending (insofar as black Americans were afforded upward social mobility in the late 19th and early 20th centuries).

This elite group flawlessly executed an elaborate fête of crafting a flawless Rickey, their town’s native highball. A common knack for preparing cocktails, however, was only one of several factors leading to the guild’s formation. D.C.’s segregation laws necessitated the creation of the Black-owned bars, restaurants, hotels and clubs that employed these men, including the Philadelphia House, the Academy Restaurant, Gray and Costley and the Sparta Buffet.

TRUE STORY: we’ve been friends with David Hartogs, the owner of for many years. In fact, we connected curbside over and then quickly realized we both had a passion for . Over the years, we’ve shared many stories about , , , and soooo many other things. When was murdered in he was one of the first to reach out and ask how I was doing/what could he do to help. I will not name drop, but for every text, phone call, DM of concern from YOU, our Tribe; we felt the love and quickly realized there is more love than hate in this world. See, we don’t count people; we count our blessings and we love you.
Fast forward, David buzzed me and said: we’re partnering with to make their (our version will be a Coffee Vanilla stout) to stand in solidarity with the injustices facing the Black community. He said we’d like to use your proprietary vanilla bean. Without hesitation we accepted. 💯 of proceeds will be donated to . Stay tuned, but we’re looking at a mid-August release. Coincidentally, the timing will be around famous speech. In fact, August 28th, 2020 will be the 57th anniversary of this iconic speech. We’re extremely excited about this collaboration and — cheers 🍻 .
