I'm sorry to have to report that I've decided to not attend the downtown Christmas market this Saturday (December 3). I'm still recovering from a cold, and shivering in the chilly air will only prolong my convalescence. However, I'm throwing all my efforts into the Unitarian Universalist Art Fair on Friday and Saturday. Hope to see you all there!

“Weather Permitting”

Pretty much anyone who has spoken to me at a farmers market and asked the question, “Are you here every week?” hears my answer, “Yes, I am. Weather permitting.” The past two markets have not been as meteorologically permissive as I would have hoped. Wednesday was rained out. Saturday was rained out. Tomorrow (5/25) isn’t looking promising from a precipitation standpoint, and I will be out of town on Saturday (5/28) due to a death in my family.

I am missing more markets that I want to, and my gratitude for your understanding knows no bounds. Here’s hoping that June starts on a brighter note, especially considering the Purdue market is returning to Thursdays beginning June 2! I hope to see everyone downtown, at Cumberland Park, and now on the Memorial Mall. Weather permitting.

Welcome,
glorious market day!

01/25/2022

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year! Here at Next to Godliness, we went through a household of Omicron and emerged unscathed. And we're all looking forward to the opening of the farmers markets in May. But for now, it’s cold. It’s dark. We all need a little pick-me-up, and there is plenty of soap to be had. I’m including a list of what is currently in stock, and I’ll update it as it changes. Message me if you’d like to purchase some for yourself or as a gift.

I will get out on Fridays to make deliveries in the Greater Lafayette area, or I can ship at cost outside the region. My delivery preference is to meet in a public space or your place of work, and I usually do business in a library or grocery store, as well as most places on campus I can access. As usual, soaps are $5 each, and any three or more are $4.50 each. I’ll take cash, credit, venmo, and several other electronic transfers.

Send me a FB message if you’d like to order, and let’s all stay warm out there!

What’s in stock:

Arabian Nights
• Send your camel to bed and relax in the oasis with this haunting, mysterious blend containing touches of amber, incense and a hint of patchouli. The fragrance oil colors the soap a deep, warm mahogany, which is stirred in with veins and swirls of white.

Cool Change
• Proud to be trans? Cool!
A change to become your authentic self can be a commitment, leading to contentment, fulfillment, agreement, and … peppermint?
OK, a bar of peppermint soap won’t change the world, but pampering yourself might bolster your pride in YOU so you can show the world how cool it is to be who you were “mint” to be.

Driven Snow
• Sometimes all you want is nothing, and nothing is what you get in this bar. No fragrance, no color – nothing to irritate skin or affront your nose. To make up for what it might lack, this soap is cut a bit thicker than the others, so you can get just a bit more of … well … nothing.

Frost Bite
• When noses are stuffy, a cool menthol rub can lull a child to sleep, and you can partake of the grown-up version of those soothing vapors. Sweet peppermint oil nips at your nose while cooling eucalyptus penetrates into your foggy head. Whether used in a steamy shower or a hot bath, this white bar swirled with frosty green and blue is a chip off the ice cap.

Hot Cocoa
• What chases away the chills better after a long day out in the cold? A warm bath? Or a steaming mug of hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream? Now you don’t have to choose between them; have both with Hot Cocoa soap. Each rich, chocolatey bar contains real cocoa powder and is topped with a dollop of thick, frothy cream. It’s a sweet indulgence for chocoholics of all ages.

Lightly Lavender
• Wash away your stress with the calming scent of lavender. Whether you’re just beginning your day, or winding down to sleep, this soothing, lightly-scented soap might just play a part in relaxing away your tension.

Morning Blend
• This lightly scented soap is made with toasted oatmeal and a strong espresso swirl. The oatmeal provides a gentle exfoliant and this gritty little bar will do its best to wake you up and get your day started. Morning Blend is ideal for those who like a less strongly scented soap, but don’t want to settle for a less interesting bar.

Smoky Mountains
• The tent is up, the sky is dark; wonderful scents surround you – the pine of the woods blends with the smoky cedar from the campfire just leaping to life. A white bar swirled with steel-gray wisps, Smoky Mountains takes you to your favorite campsite in the foothills.

Spa Day
• Sometimes you just need to get away and renew yourself. Now you can, with every shower. The harmony of Earth, Water and Sky are reflected in the colors of nature in Spa Day, and the blend of essential oils – refreshing eucalyptus, healing tea tree and soothing lavender – makes your “me time” complete.

Triple Citrus Scrub
• Lime and orange essential oils, plus added lemon peel for texture, equal Triple Citrus Scrub, a wildly popular blend that’s the pick of both men and women alike. This is the one soap I almost always have in my own shower, and it goes with me when I travel.

Trippy Hippie
• Remember Woodstock? No?
Brace yourself, because this soap might bring on a few flashbacks. The harmony of passionate purple and vivid green – infused with the rich scent of patchouli and the tartness of lime – won’t expand your mind, but it’ll leave you feelin’ groovy.

You “B” You
• When you’re the “B” in “LGBT,” it’s easy to feel overlooked, ignored, or erased. But you should wear those stripes proudly and “B” noticed. Blue raspberry and red cranberry blend sweetly together with a little lime for tartness in this soap that is as unique as you are.

I am SO stoked to have the local craft shows, markets and bazaars back this year! Ain't no season like the post-season! Hope to see everyone in the next few weeks for holiday shopping.

Ah, if it’s not one thing, it’s another. Last week, I was out of town with friends and family, memorializing my late father. All ready to get back into the farmers market groove this week, I was heading to the garage to load up the car, and tripped over a baby gate, landing hard on my back. That was it for the Wednesday market, and I’m hoping to be free enough from pain tomorrow to attend the Purdue market. All healing thoughts are welcome.

09/02/2021

Please accept my heartfelt apologies for my recent farmers market absences. Last week, I learned that my father had passed away, and there was a rush to plan a service and burial that would accommodate our family.

After nearly a week in a community with a dismal vaccination rate and no masks, bookended by way more time in planes and airports than is reasonable, I am exhausted and have caught a cold, with a cough and sore throat. No fever, so that's good, but I will not be at the Purdue market, and Saturday the 4th is tentative at best. I appreciate all the understanding I can get while I recover. Thank you all.

Happy Thanksgiving week!

Our "regular" farmers market season is over, but it’s time for some post-season outdoor gatherings. Saturday, Nov. 21, will see us at our usual downtown space on 5th St. from 8:00-12:30.

And on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 25 (the day before the big day), there will be another mini-market from 2:00-5:00 in Cumberland Park in West Lafayette.

Come shop. Stay safe. Give thanks.
