HAMBURGER HILL: THE BATTLE FOR HILL 937

In May 1969, American soldiers were ordered to take a heavily fortified mountain in South Vietnam’s A Shau Valley known on military maps simply as Hill 937.

What followed became one of the most legendary battles of the Vietnam War.

The mountain, known locally as D**g Ap Bia, was defended by experienced North Vietnamese Army troops who had transformed its steep, jungle-covered slopes into a formidable defensive position. Bunkers, trenches, concealed fighting positions, dense vegetation, difficult terrain, and punishing weather made every advance extraordinarily difficult.

Leading the American assault were soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division — the “Screaming Eagles” — fighting alongside other U.S. and South Vietnamese forces.

For ten days, American soldiers fought their way up the mountain.

Again and again, they attacked through dense jungle and steep terrain against an entrenched enemy. Artillery, helicopter gunships and U.S. airpower hammered enemy positions while infantrymen pushed forward on the ground.

The intensity of the fighting gave Hill 937 the name by which history would remember it:

Hamburger Hill.

On May 20, 1969, soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division reached the summit and secured Hill 937.

The battle became controversial back home, particularly after American forces later withdrew from the hill. But that political debate should never overshadow what the soldiers on that mountain accomplished.

They were given an extraordinarily difficult mission against a determined and well-entrenched enemy.

They fought. They climbed. They persevered. And they took the hill.

More than half a century later, Hamburger Hill remains a powerful chapter in the history of the United States Army and the legendary 101st Airborne Division.

Today, we honor the American warriors who fought on Hill 937 and the Vietnam veterans who answered their nation’s call.

Their courage deserves to be remembered.
