Six months ago I was CHILLIN' in Sperry OK and bartending for a MASH-themed birthday celebration... I was hired by the daughter of the birthday-mom (a dedicated fan of the show).
Not having seen the series since the 70s, I reacquainted myself before the party by watching a few episodes online. Despite the numerous sexual-innuendos that would fall-short of humor for much of today's woke culture, Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce was clearly at the top of his game; and much of the writing combined profound themes with tremendous heart.
Sperry Oklahoma (where I was) is a remote upper-end suburb next to a pictorial lake about 30 minutes north of Tulsa. The hosts' home was spacious and the festivities were held on a side-patio, festooned with camouflage and a pair of PINK NEON LIPS (in homage of the beloved character, Margaret โHot Lipsโ Houlihan).
I invested in a camo shirt and hat; I thought it'd be fun to ROCK the theme โ not to mention green is good on me and a needed compliment for my wardrobe. As the sun set behind the lake I prepared the bar, and served wine and beer to around 40 guests โ as well as champagne, White Claw, and the evening's signature drink, โThe MASH Martini.โ
Outside of Tulsa's city-limits, the majority of folks in Oklahoma are conservative, and often get a bum-rap in the media as being bigoted or out of touch. I feel this to be an unfair characterization as nothing could be further from the truth. Everyone I had the pleasure of meeting that night was overwhelmingly friendly, open-minded, and kind.
As I was serving drinks, I also distributed dog-tags to the guests (costume-jewelry), while having several interesting conversations and making new friends (many of whom took my business card for future bartending and singing-telegram gigs).
Towards the end of the evening I secured my status as legend with my rendition of "Su***de is Painless" (the MASH theme song), and the daughter who'd found and hired me, showed her appreciation with a 5-star review and VERY GENEROUS gratuity!
