LUNCH SERVICE 12-4pm TODAY

We have and extended lunch service today, with food available from now until 4pm. So, if you want a snack or light bite, or you want something fancier (examples of which are shown in the photos). Whether you want a late lunch or an early supper, we will be open a little later than normal this lunchtime. Unfortunately, however, there will be no food service this evening, and the pub will be closing at 8pm. We look forward to seeing you here 😀

⚡️🎸LIVE MUSIC THIS FRIDAY, 28/8🎸⚡️
Many thanks to The Man from Funkle for entertaining us last Friday. I was so snowed under I unfortunately didn’t manage to get any footage, but I know it was a great gig.
Now this Friday we turn our attention to Bar None, who are back with their mix of rock, pop and blues covers, which always go down a storm. Assuming the weather is kind, this will perhaps be the last outdoor gig of the summer, so take advantage while you can. Free overnight camping is available as always, so let’s make it an evening to remember. We look forward to seeing you here 😀

🏆 🥇 1️⃣ Mission accomplished😀 Here I am, wearing my own ‘maillot jaune’ to celebrate the victory of the 50 great stages of the Somerset CAMRA Pub Trail. I would like to take the time to thank all of those who have helped me on this journey. I would not have been able to complete it on my own, and it certainly would not have been as much fun. Thanks to Marie, for allowing me the freedom to pursue this madcap adventure. Thanks to my great support team of designated drivers, who made a sacrifice in support of my aim, and for no gain of their own. Thanks especially to Tom, who wasn’t even collecting the stickers, but who we eventually realised would have qualified for his own t-shirt had he bothered to collect them. Thank you to all my friends and customers of the Clavel who showed an interest in what I was doing, indulging this silly person in his silly caper. I cannot wait to receive my (very expensive) t-shirt and wear it with pride when I revisit the pubs.

And now, the end is near. And, I certainly have done it my way 🫡 What another great weekend of pub hunting it has been. This weekend saw us do the Glastonbury swing and the Watchet cluster of pubs. All of the staff and locals we have met have been amazing to get to know, apart from in the Meare pub - but, I mean, how were we supposed to know that we were not allowed to chow down on their private buffet at their private party? 🤔😬 Awkward exit, stage left from there. An honest mistake, with no malice intended, tho. We bumped into the actual Chairman of Somerset CAMRA, Mick, in the Star Inn, in Watchet, and I had a great conversation with him about the pub trail. What are the chances? Also, we learned that you can shower off your dog in the Hood Inn, in Kilve. Useful to know if you are in the area and have a mucky pup 🐶 🐕 Now, my attention turns to Sunday, and the largely processional final stage to the Farmers Arms, in Combe Florey. There, we will be able to take our time, and savour our surroundings, which is something we have not been able to do at many of these pubs along the way. However, now I am armed with the facts, I look forward to returning to these pubs, and to exploring new ones in the near future. I hope you look forward to doing the same, too. Now to drape myself over a washing line and dry out - which some believe is the origin of the phrase ‘to be hung over.’ Happy pub-going, all you lovely people.

Yesterday saw us take on another clutch of pubs on the Somerset CAMRA pub trail, starting with the Etsome Arms in Somerton. This lively micro pub has a big selection of local ales and the staff were friendly and helpful. Next we enjoyed a drink in the sunshine at the Halfway House at Pitney, which always delivers. Then we bumped into friends Clive 'Swampy' Davey and Emily Jackson @ the Rose and Crown (Eli’s), a cool pub with no actual bar and funky urinals. Next up was the Old Pound Inn at Aller - again, a fun pub with friendly people and good beer. Then, after a lengthy diversion we made it to the King Alfred at Burrowbridge, a fun pub with free s***f at the bar and that lovely low-alcohol Proper Job on draught😍 On the home run we saw some friend Charley Richings, Will and locals of the Clavel at the Bird in Hand at North Curry and the crown Inn at Fivehead, both great pubs. All in all, a great day was had, and now I have completed 33 out to f the 50. Long May this summer ale trail continue😀☀️💪

We may not have music this evening, but we do next Friday, 14th August. Next week, we welcome The Sidetracks Band to the Clavel for the first time. This ensemble band play Authentic USA Harmony Country Rock, which sounds like it will be a good fit for the pub. Music starts from 8:00, with free overnight camping available to all. We look forward to seeing you here😀☀️

Oh, and also, as well as continuing to come here, by order of Phillip Arscott, don’t forget to go to the Honiton Hill Rally this August bank holiday weekend. I don’t know what really goes on there. All things agricultural, I believe. Plus, you can get food, drink and they have lots in the way of entertainment. A cracking weekend is up for grabs, so be sure you don’t miss out 🚜 🛻

Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt - now😍 Sunday saw me enjoy my own company and pick up the clutch of pubs in South Somerset, in and around Crewkerne and South Petherton. It was a gloriously sunny day and being on my own was part self-care, part-Clavel admin day. I went to plenty of pubs, including the Muddled Man, which has just featured on The Telegraph’s list of top 500 UK pubs. I took in some stunning views over Ham Hill, I spoke to several welcoming landlords, bar staff and locals, and I did some research for my next pub quiz (19th August, btw). I was able to enjoy live music at two of the pubs, including the Prince of Wales at Stoke-sub-Hamdon, where they did a zero-alcohol Proper Job on draught that was massively impressive. If you have not been, I recommend it highly - for the pub itself, the nearby lay-by with those views, and the Iron Age hill fort and stone circle (which I did not get to see on this occasion). Then, on Tuesday, my mate Steve kindly was the designated driver as we made our way up to Exmoor, covering over 100 miles in total. We passed nearby to the Tarr Steps and took in the amazing views across the English Channel towards Wales as we descended Dunkery Hill down towards Porlock. Whilst there, we visited the Ship Inn, another of the pubs to make the top-500 list, a cracking pub with good beer and quirky features. All in all, I have had a brilliant couple of days out, and I would call on you to get out and explore some of these gems for yourself. Of course, we look forward to you coming up to the Holman Clavel, as we are taking part in the pub trail this year, so you will be able to collect a sticker from us, as well as enjoy some good beer and food. Most importantly, I have now collected 26 stickers, which qualifies me for the t-shirt to mark this achievement. Now, I can’t wait to visit the rest😍😀☀️Somerset CAMRA

This year we are participating in the Somerset CAMRA pub trail, and so I thought it’d be a nice idea to try and visit some of these pubs myself, and perhaps even obtain a t-shirt for visiting half (25) of them. I have now collected stickers from 12 of the pubs (see pic. 2), which is pretty good, but what started out as a casual bit of fun, discovering new pubs, has now turned into an operation that is being planned with military precision. Pic 3 shows my planning map, with day trips planned and potential routes highlighted, and now my aim is to visit all 50 of the pubs. We are closed on Tuesdays, which presents my greatest opportunity to visit these pubs. But my problem is that, so too are several of the other pubs closed 😬 However, with some nifty planning and bagging myself a couple of days across the weekends, I now hope to visit every single pub on the map before the deadline in September. With a designated driver on hand, wish me luck my unexpected, but, so far, rewarding challenge🤞💪🫡
