🐾 UPDATE! NEW MEETING DATE & TIME FOR DOGS ON TYBEE BEACH! 🐕
After nearly 15 years of talking about it Tybee Island is taking another look at allowing dogs on the beach!
🚨Tybee City Council's public workshop has been moved to Thursday, October 15 at 3PM at the Tybee Island Police Station.🚨
Could Tybee finally find a reasonable way to allow dogs on the beach? 🤔
As I shared last week St. Simons Island and Hilton Head Island both allow dogs on their beaches with certain rules and restrictions. The same wild animals and birds that visit our beaches visit theirs too. Could something similar work on Tybee?
Mayor Brian West recently shared his thoughts on the issue and discussed both the benefits and concerns.
THE CASE FOR DOGS 🐕
Allowing dogs on the beach could give pets a place to exercise and socialize while letting families enjoy the beach together. It could also make Tybee more welcoming to visitors traveling with pets and potentially benefit local restaurants and other businesses.
THE CONCERNS ❌
There are also legitimate concerns about protecting nesting shorebirds and other wildlife. Keeping dogs under control and cleaning up pet waste are important too. Not everyone is comfortable around dogs and everyone should be able to enjoy the beach.
But does it have to be an all-or-nothing decision?
Possible options include designated dog-friendly areas or leash requirements. Limited hours and seasonal restrictions could also be considered along with protected wildlife zones.
The question is whether Tybee can find a reasonable balance between allowing dogs on the beach and protecting wildlife while respecting everyone who enjoys our beaches.
So.....
🐾 Should dogs be allowed on Tybee's beach?
🐾 Should they be limited to certain hours or areas?
🐾 Should leashes be required?
🐾 Could Tybee adopt rules similar to St. Simons or Hilton Head?
