I was saddened this week to learn that two members of our Clinton/Savannah Pool Family, LeRoy Anderson and Chuck Schroeder, have passed away. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all who knew them and are affected by this loss, especially our Dear friends Jerry and Joan Anderson and Family, as well as the Schroeder Family!
..........And then there was the day these guys walked into Smitty’s! I did not realize how this would change the place, FOREVER! Savannah, Illinois? Where is that? Next to Clinton, Iowa? Where is that? State Pool I asked? .........All they said was you better order more beer! It wasn’t an hour and I knew Smitty’s Family had just expanded Eastward! Busy day for me as a young bartender and as I turn around here goes this shorter, older sort of gentleman, right out the front door with a drink balancing on top of his head, right into the bar across the street he went, with the drink still on his head. As I am kind of saying “Hey”, Someone says, “Don’t worry about that” “It is just Chuck”! So I didn’t worry, I just went with it! As this group grew I realized that Clinton really wasn’t that far from Savannah as they continued to multiply! Silver Dollar? Where is that? They all came too! Wasn’t long and this group of new friends would occupy the entire Smitty’s Bar, at Noon on a Thursday! Soon I learned that Chuck owned one of the Bars in Savannah named Schroeder’s. I also learned that he was an Icon, not only for walking with drinks on his head, but his pool game!

A little later I heard a crash in the bathroom, sounded like the toilet had been smashed. In fact, it wasn’t the toilet, it was the porcelain sink that had just hit the floor and smashed into pieces. Out walks my new friend LeRoy! Like nothing happened, LeRoy sits down and tells me, “Before you worry about that, could you get us another round”? A little confused I followed instructions, got his table a another round and then went and took care of the sink. LeRoy, we will miss you!

Over the years we have spent much time with our Clinton/Savannah friends, in Davenport, Des Moines, Waterloo, Savannah, Clinton, The Dollar and Smitty’s! Too many stories for this page but remember the Starting Line Hubble? Or was it the Finish Line? That was the BEST time!

Cheers to you LeRoy and Chuck, you will be sadly missed and the fun memories will live forever!
