Loved this post from Brian Biro!! Be a networker who gives!
Be a Networker Who GIVES!
My friend John Locke is the best networker I know! Everyone seems to know and admire him because he exemplifies the two secrets to real networking…seek to give rather than to get and ask more than tell!
When John meets people he is genuinely interested in them. He is full of questions about what’s important to them. As he listens he looks for connections that will serve that individual. He is a relationship catalyst because he first seeks to understand. You instantly trust John because he clearly seeks to serve you and service is love in action. He is excited to build connections for others without thinking about what it will bring him. And there is a natural law he puts into effect through this authentic desire to serve which says, “Whenever you seek to enrich another’s experience, you can’t help but enrich your own!”
When you ask more than tell as you network you convey to others that you are genuinely interested in them. People LOVE that! They feel important and interesting. When you ask more than tell you are far more present because you are not caught up in worrying about what you’re going to say next. When you seek first to serve and understand rather than seeking to be understood you build great rapport and trust. The other magical benefit of this extraordinary networking is that it puts YOU at ease as much as those you meet. It takes the pressure off and moves you from ego to “we go.”
