BAAAAA! Happy National Goat Day yesterday! We got this off the national forest service page! This is why we love our goats! And we have many available as well if you are interested
Today we are celebrating the true G.O.A.T.s of the trail! Most people think of goats mostly as farm animals, beloved for their delicious cheese and nutritious milk, but they are also the ultimate sidekick for outdoor adventures.
Here is why these incredible animals deserve all the love on :
• Lightweight Footprint: Their small, soft hooves cause far less trail erosion than heavy horses or mules. If you want to leave no trace, you couldn’t ask for a better pack animal
• Surefootedness: Goats effortlessly hop over deadfall and navigate steep, rocky terrain that might stymie a traditional pack animal
• Built-In Backpacks: A conditioned adult pack goat can comfortably haul 20% to 25% of its body weight in gear.
• Zero Feed to Pack: As native foragers, they graze happily on the go, eliminating the need to carry heavy feed.
They are also forest health superheroes!
When goats hit the trail, they act as nature’s land managers. By selectively eating invasive weeds, overgrown brush, and flammable ladder fuels, they actively help prevent catastrophic wildfires and reduce the need for toxic chemical herbicides. Even better, their stepping hooves naturally aerate the ground while their manure fertilizes the soil, allowing native plants to thrive.
But wait, there’s more: Did you know that goats are naturally social animals and bond to their owners? That means you don’t have to look for a hitching post when you are engaged in a multi-day adventure with your pack goats.
