A new PhD project based at the University of Liverpool is taking a close look at how underground dance music scenes are still alive and adapting—especially in cities where nightlife collides with gentrification. The researcher is focusing on Liverpool’s current wave of independent parties and non-mainstream club nights, many of which operate outside the commercial core. The study tracks how these scenes form, how they resist assimilation, and what keeps them distinct from the EDM-branded mainstream.

One of the key insights is the role of older participants. The research challenges the idea that dance culture belongs only to the young. Instead, it highlights how longtime promoters, DJs, and dancers are still shaping underground scenes well into their 40s and beyond. This isn’t nostalgia—it’s about how identity, community, and music evolve together over time. The study also explores how different generations navigate subcultural status, influence, and what it means to still be seen as “underground.”

The research combines interviews, fieldwork, and grounded theory to build a detailed map of how underground nightlife operates under pressure. Liverpool serves as a focused case study, but the findings will resonate across any city where nightlife is being squeezed by redevelopment and cultural branding. The full study is titled “The Persistence of the Underground in Dance Music Scenes” and is currently underway as part of a doctoral program at the University of Liverpool.

100% This!!

I’ve been an Artist my whole life. This applies to every art form (visual and audible), especially the electronic music/ DJ world.

It feels surreal at times, when I have a moment to reflect on being a DJ for almost 3 decades. It’s a good sign when I still blush when someone gives me a compliment after all this time…All that I’ve done, and where my love/ dedication to the music/ culture that I remain faithful to has taken me. Always hopeful for more opportunities to do this, to go further (nationally and internationally) while I still can. It’s crazy to me I’ve been doing this for more than 1/2 of my life. I can’t stop, I won’t stop.

The Beginnings of Substructure

In and around 1995 or so, two friends of mine in Richmond, VA, while we were attending VCU, came up with the name FUNKREW. Things were already brewing with us, immersed in the underground electronic music culture, always creating, whether music, art, or memorable times through togetherness and excuses to experience the music we loved so much. Under the name Funkrew we put on quite a few house parties and then I did many events under that name for many years into the future.

Fast forward to 2002 when I started my ROBOT ROK event series and was asked to play the legendary BUZZ in DC, I was asked if I had a crew, so as to host the back patio. Rather than use the name Funkrew, I came up with SUBSTRUCTURE, then I gathered a few talented DC dj’s to be with me under Substructure for the night. They accepted, the night happened, and it was amazing (Thankful for that and the opportunity). Since then, I have used Substructure to represent me as a Dj, my ROBOT ROK event series, and other Dj’s, and hope to continue that into the future in any way I can through our beloved underground music.

For me, it has aways been about the music, and the feeling of family we once had, sharing great, memorable times through art and music, as well as the atmosphere...

Peace and stay tuned....
