Long before this building became home to Firehouse Brewing Co., it served as Rapid City’s active fire hall beginning in 1915 — and this photo captures a piece of that history in action.

Back then, the firefighters’ living quarters were located upstairs in the space that is now Skybox Sports Bar. When emergency calls came in, firefighters would slide down the fire pole to the apparatus floor below where the wagons and equipment were kept ready to go.

What many people don’t realize is that the original fire pole was not located where it stands today. It originally ran through the area where our main staircase is now located before later becoming incorporated into the bar itself. If you know where to look, you can still spot this incredible piece of Firehouse history standing right in the middle of the restaurant.

More than a century later, the building still carries pieces of its original purpose — and stories like this are part of what makes Firehouse so special.
