White Kiva (Pretendians pretend)

we may never enter
how could it be otherwise
beg entry at the threshold
we set our own trap
breach the sacred
opens the scars salt in the wounds
Bad medicine portal to pain agony loss
never ending
ear shattering silent screams
muffled and mute
I hear the Shaman sing
we set our own trap
how could it be otherwise
we may never enter Bad medicine

Pretendian

Pretendian is a pejorative colloquialism for Indigenous identity fraud, that is, a non-Native person falsely and publicly claiming an Indigenous identity. It is a portmanteau of pretend and Indian.

PRETENDIANS

cultural appropriation is an exploitative means in which cultural elements are lost or distorted when they are removed from their originating cultural contexts. Such displays are disrespectful and can even be considered a form of desecration. Cultural elements that may have deep meaning in the original culture may be reduced to "exotic" fashion or toys by those from the dominant culture. Kjerstin Johnson has written that, when this is done, the imitator, "who does not experience that oppression is able to 'play', temporarily, an 'exotic' other, without experiencing any of the daily discriminations faced by other cultures". The black American academic, musician, and journalist Greg Tate argued that appropriation and the "fetishizing" of cultures, in fact, alienate those whose culture is being appropriated.

diluted by wine, polluted
conflicted by truth, deluded
unable to divest
an oil man at best
Write me a haiku about fracking,
a song to the wildcat,
Wells, drills, rigs,
sing you their lullaby,
inject that Frack juice
wring the last drop from out your bones
drill Frack poison spill,
write me a haiku Shaman
