- A baby has a way of making a man out of her father and a boy out of her grandfather. You were young at heart until your last breathe. I don’t know why, but I keep thinking about how in 2012 when I was going to Spain for the Summer, I downloaded Skype on your new desktop computer so we could video chat while I was gone. I was freshly 19 and had only used the app a couple times before. But you caught onto everything so quickly. 71 years old at the time, & there you were on my screen answering my video call from 4,000 miles away. Oceans couldn’t separate us and death cannot separate us. My angel on earth and beyond. Always with me, forever. • ❤️

Last night after the sun had already set, we were playing baseball on the porch. He swung at the ball I pitched and missed. He threw his head back and cackled while stumbling to retrieve the ball. He turned to me and said, “this is fun, momma.” Silently, I wondered how many more times he would say those exact words to me. My mind wondered to a future scene where he uses different words to convey the same meaning. Maybe we are on vacation. Maybe we are having a beer together. I’ll hear him say, “This is sweet, mom” and my soul will be filled with happiness because I’ll go back to that night on the porch playing baseball with my toddler and I’ll know that what he’s really saying is “This is fun, momma.”

A fun little montage of 1994 with my own family.

In 1994, I turned 1 year old. We celebrated holidays; my parents witnessed their first child take her first steps; we vacationed in Myrtle Beach & Florida. It’s interesting to see how much has changed yet stayed the same. There are people videoed that are no longer with us & who are terribly missed. Those that I am lucky enough to still have here have grown older but their smiles and personalities are unchanged. My dad’s sense of humor has not altered; he would still find it hilarious to ask a baby to go fetch him a beer. 😂
