We went 2/3 today on tracks. First track of the day took us to just outside Alliquipa Pa.
Wait time on this track was approximately 24 hours as the hunter thought his shot was a bit back. We deliberated on tracking it at the last hour of good light last night. But ultimately decided that in order to find it in its first bed and not chance bumping it out of the county. We ran it this morning. Luci winded him from the hit site. And getting her to track by ground scent if almost impossible after she gets that death scent from the thermals. Maybe 100 yards from hit site he went.

Second track of the day took us to Hookstown Pa. For a gut shot buck that was jumped the night before. A case of tracking too early still a dead deer with time. Proving her worth Luci found the bucks path from the point of loss. She worked a quad trail a good way with zero blood. Unknowingly ( wind was wrong) Luci and I passed within 10 yards of the buck as Luci was tracking by ground scent Luci soon after made a cut down to the right and I hear a commotion behind me from the hunters. Who spotted the buck bedded and its head was up! Still alive!
We had talked about bringing a weapon of season. And ultimately did not. So the hunter had to make his way back to the side x side and back to the house for that legal weapon.

The rest of us just sat in silence and awaited his return. A follow up shot was needed and accomplished. Luci was on his trail on the path he took to that final bed.

Now these two deer shows. That you just never know how long your wait time should be. In one case we played it safe and did not track. Obviously now to us we should have. The other we tracked at the recommended wait time and found it still alive. Congratulations to both hunters on your fine Pennsylvania Bucks!

Oh I forgot the third track so I’m editing this post. This track was in Bulger Pa. Hunters Grandfather contacted me on the way home from Hookstown. I was done for the day but when he said it was for his grandson’s first deer! And the fact they explained a center mass shot. I was all in even when he explained they may have compromised the scent line with two grid searches and bringing the family dog down for a try. And initially tracking the deer soon after the shot.
The area was about as thick as thick can get and it was hard maneuvering to try and play the wind. Almost impossible! But we tried for a hour. My conclusion is they tracked way too soon for an eventuality dead deer. Pushing it who knows how far? A mile is not out of the question.. do I think I could possibly find it? Absolutely but the work involved would have been extensive and still may have been in vain. So I called it. Coyotes have to eat too!

Helping to recover a young hunter’s first deer is always a special moment! This small doe may as well been a monster buck . Only in this young hunter’s mind. The teamwork he and his brother put into dragging out of the woods on their own,was special to me only because I know these two siblings will remember this moment the rest of their lives. The last thing the young hunter said to me before I left was “ I feel Proud “ I told him that he did a great job and he certainly should be proud of himself! Congratulations young man!

First proof of life of the year. On a buck we tracked on the 28th of September. Shot placement was unknown due to the fact the bolt clipped the hunters blind on a 18 yard shot. The hunter had us come out to check. Luci wasn’t much interested in it at all.

Got a picture today. Hunter was able to get another shot on it and made it count. First hit went into the hind quarters. So proof of life for the day we tracked it!

The Big 8 has been recovered! Stewart’s blood tracking is on the board! This hunter made a good shot ! However in the heat of the moment made the decision to track too early. Bumped this bruiser out of what would have been its death bed. This buck ended up in some of the thickest briar patch known to man. It didn’t go far after being jumped. 150 yards maybe? The hunter was sure he walked right by it within feet . However unless you have the nose of a dog or X-ray vision to see through dense brush you ain’t finding it. Starting at last blood Luci merely had to throw her head in the air and it was pretty much over right then and there. A few minutes of pruning back the briars and vegetation so I could get in there with her to confirm we had him.

I’m now using AI gathering data on my tracks ! We can also rough score your rack pretty accurately even more so once I pick up a tape. To help generate the mass ( which is tough for AI to generate without a quick photo showing circumference)

Some statistics on this one

Location Beaver County PA 2B
Weapon Crossbow
Broadhead NAP spitfire
Age of track 36 hours
Rough score 131

Remember your proper wait times this hunter lost his meat for his mistake. Don’t bash him for it! He still made proper effort for a recovery!

On the track of a Big 8 ! Stay tuned! 36 hours post shot!
