Hardly a week goes by without hearing of some friend who has departed for the great unknown.
Like most musicians/performers I've depended on those generous souls who opened doors for me. Most of them asking nothing in return.
I could list them out and will at some point but for now I remember Dickie Smith. A Philadelphian, born in working class Olney.
He achieved great things in industry and raised his family on the Main Line.
He never forgot where he came from and loved to hear the songs of his people.
He was one of the many raised up by the post war economy, when upward mobility was possible.
A rising tide lifts all boats. And so it was that Richard made sure I was hired on for gigs among the Main line Irishtocracy.
I will sing at his memorial on Monday.
Solas sioraí.
