On Monday, June 12, join Science on Tap - Philadelphia for our next in-person event: Bacteriophage and Us: Harnessing the Power of the Puppet Master

Resident phages may hold the secret to success for healthy f***l transplants to treat numerous gastrointestinal diseases where probiotics fail. In this talk, Tabb Sullivan, Ph.D., a Principal Scientist at Integral Molecular, will explore the history of bacteriophages, what we currently know, and what is being done to harness their power for treating challenging diseases. We will then explore what could be possible if we can manipulate the virome within.

This event will be held at National Mechanics located at 22 S 3rd St Philadelphia, PA. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are not required for this event. Click the 🔗 below for more information:

Science On Tap returns to National Mechanics next month! Join us on Monday, April 10 for our April event: Quilting Science Stories from Alaska to the South Atlantic Ocean

Scientists have been increasing their use of communication tools such as blog posts, podcasts, and videos, to expand their reach and bring in new audiences to conversations around science. How about using a more creative approach, such as quilts to tell stories of science?

Marine geologist Dr. Laura Guertin (Penn State Brandywine) will take us on the journey of when she first started combining her quilting and science storytelling skills, and how her field experiences in Alaska, Louisiana, and on a two-month ocean expedition in the South Atlantic Ocean are being shared with quilts.

This event will be held at National Mechanics, located at 22 S 3rd St Philadelphia, PA. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are not required. We have missed our in-person events and look forward to sharing science with you at our favorite local bar this spring and summer!

Join us tonight at 6 pm for The Laboring Physician: How Brown-Séquard's Method Emerged in the American Clinic, 1889-1900.

The field of endocrinology began in June 1889, when the ageing Franco-American physiologist Charles Brown-Séquard injected himself with a concoction of crushed up testicles, semen, and blood that he harvested from guinea pigs and dogs. In this talk, Patrick shows how Brown-Séquard’s experiments caused a global sensation, and started a new field of medical science, especially in America. This talk comes with a content warning: Patrick weaves a story of grisly and ghastly experiments performed by American doctors, who made foul-smelling and foul-tasting medicine from the offcuts of recently slaughtered animals. It wasn’t pretty, and it wasn’t elegant, but history rarely is. Come along to Patrick’s talk to learn how cowboy doctors got their hands dirty with animal carcasses and made surprisingly effective remedies in the fin-de-siècle.

Dr. Jason Weckstein, Associate Curator of Ornithology at Philadelphia’s Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, will take us on an armchair expedition into the Belém area in Northeastern Brazil, where he co-led a team conducting research to discover and describe the bird and bird parasite diversity in the region. He’ll share an up-close-and-personal look at everything from daily life in the field to the area’s biodiversity, the endemism patterns in birds and their associated parasites found there, and how the team’s findings are being used to advance our understanding of speciation, disease and parasite ecology, and conservation.

Join us as Dr. Rebecca Gibson disccuses her new research on what drives historical and modern efforts to stamp out the practice of corseting. Looking at the most used historical document, a textbook written in 1908 by French doctor Ludovic O'Followell, as well as 21st century takes on the practice of corseting, from Bridgerton to the Kardashians, she will give an overview of the ways in which corseting has been misrepresented, misunderstood, and dismissed as simply a women's problem, in medicine, media, and scholarship.

Ray-finned fishes, or actinopterygians, include fishes with familiar shapes like goldfish, tuna, and salmon, as well as some very oddly shaped fishes like seahorses, flounder, and pufferfish. Not only do ray-finned fishes exhibit remarkable morphological diversity, they are also found in diverse environments, ranging from small freshwater streams to the deep sea.

In her talk, Dr. Mickle will discuss her work on lower actinopterygian fishes, how new species are described, and why detailed taxonomic descriptions are important not only for our understanding of the diversity of these fossil fishes but also our understanding of today’s ray-finned fishes.

Autonomous Robots, Aerial Imagery, and Archaeology
Monday November 14, 2022, 6pm virtual via Zoom

Archaeologists have long understood the value of an aerial view for understanding past landscapes. The last decade has seen an extraordinary change in technology as drones, lidar and high-res satellite imagery have allowed access to a variety of aerial data, and the emergence of increasingly complex research questions that can be answered remotely. Join us for a talk with Dr. Austin "Chad" Hill, who will be discussing his work with drones, remote sensing, and a variety of sensor technologies with examples from projects in Jordan, Israel, and the U.S.
