Comedy Workshops with Dave Schwensen With the author of "How To Be A Working Comic." Former talent coordinator for TV show "A&E's An Evening at the Improv" and LA and NYC Improv comedy clubs.

Becoming a successful comedian takes more than just talent and luck. It involves preparation, experience, a knowledge of the business and knowing what is expected of you. Today’s top comedians developed their humor without conforming to any trends or formulas. Talent and originality are the keys to success. However, there are established business methods within the industry that new comedians should be aware of. Developing, writing and performing a stand-up comedy act, and learning how the comedy industry works from an insider’s point of view is what this workshop is all about. (It’s also a LOT of fun!)

Fun story going way, WAY back… When I managed the NYC Improv one of the door guys was Dave Attell. We’d schedule comedians until around midnight. After that, I’d walk around the bar area to see what comedians were hanging out and would ask if they’d want to do a set (they always did – that’s why they hung out).

One night I noticed a guy I’d seen a few times but didn’t know. I asked Dave, “Who’s that guy?” He said it was Jon Stewart. I asked if he was funny and Dave said, “He’s okay.” LOL!! So, I gave him a spot.

Jon Stewart will continue to host ‘The Daily Show’ every Monday through 2028. Comedy Central announced on Monday, Oct. 19 that the longtime host will extend his run behind the desk.

When I was talent coordinator for the Hollywood and Santa Monica Improv clubs, Norm would call me with his avails and always add, “Remember, I can’t drive so I can only do the Hollywood club.”

It was true Hollywood always had more industry people hanging around and was preferable for most comics (Rosanne was the exception). But looking back, I’ve always wondered if Norm made up that excuse just to be where the action was.

Guess I’ll never know, but if so, it just adds to how funny and clever he was. The comedy world misses him big time.

From Norm Macdonald's SNL firing and concealing his cancer to his comments, here are the five biggest things in Netflix and Judd Apatow’s doc.

Larry David & Truth in Comedy: Many comedians and writers know how to turn real life experiences into hilarious stand-up bits or sitcom storylines. Here’s an example of how an experience with Larry David at The New York Improv found its way into a classic episode of “Seinfeld.”

A promotional video can open doors to paid comedy gigs, but what happens when the only stage time available is a five-minute open mic and your best material takes much longer? And does it really matter if the video is filmed in front of a live audience, especially when the venue isn’t exactly ideal for producing professional-quality footage?
*
For comedians looking to get booked, the answers involve more than simply getting laughs on camera. From understanding what talent bookers expect to learning why sticking to time limits can make or break future opportunities, this week’s FAQ and Answer looks at the business side of creating an effective comedy promo video.

Dave – Does the promotional video have to be in front of a live audience? Most open-mics are restricted to 5 minutes and my bits are longer. Also, many open-mics are poor venues to make quality vid…
