Our candles usually tell the stories of Hawai‘i. But this holiday season, we have a few more places to take you!

Hawai‘i has always been at the heart of our candle inspiration. Its places, its beauty, and the memories that stay with you.

I’ve always felt that creating a scent is a lot like writing. It comes more naturally when you have a connection to the place. A memory to draw from, a feeling to capture, a story you want to share.

On this episode of things nobody asked for, let’s talk about the words that stay with us.

Sometimes they stick because they hurt. They made us angry, broke our hearts, or touched a place that was already tender.

But sometimes words stay because they just make sense. Someone says something so simple, at exactly the right moment, and you think, “I needed to hear that.”

I’ve been blessed to have some wise people in my life. People who have lived, learned, lost, built, and started over. And I’ve always loved the ones who can put something into perspective in just a few words. Short, sweet, and occasionally a little too accurate for comfort.

Some things made sense immediately. Others took a little life experience before I understood why they were said.

Here are a few that have stayed with me over the years. Most were shared in the context of business, but life has a funny way of showing you how many places the same lesson applies.

Take what speaks to you. Sometimes a few words give you a whole new way to look at something.

Something wickedly wonderful is coming to Oakdale!

The Witches Walk is NEXT SATURDAY, October 24! Several Oakdale businesses are joining the fun, each with something special brewing. Check out each participating business to see what’s happening!

Here’s what’s brewing at ‘Ike Loa Candle Co.:

PERFUME POTIONS
A little mixing, a little magic, and a scent entirely your own! Choose from over 50 scents to blend your custom perfume oil, then fill a skull shaped 1 oz bottle with your creation.

Each ticket includes your perfume, a drink, and treats. All ages are welcome! Tickets must be purchased in advance so we have a bottle waiting for every potion maker.

HALLOWEEN MYSTERY BOXES
All treats. No tricks. And VERY limited!

Each box holds over $100 worth of items created especially for this event. These tend to disappear quickly, so arrive early! Available while supplies last. Once they’re gone, they’re gone!

A LITTLE MAGIC FOR THE LITTLES
At 4:00 PM, our youngest makers get their turn!

Each child will create a candle in a beautiful 15 oz tortoise vessel, choosing from five scents. While their candle cures, they’ll make an additional item and receive a boo bag filled with goodies!

$45 per child. Best suited for ages 3–12.

One day. So many ways to make a little magic.

“Ewwwww, why is it changing colors?!”

Every fall, we watch Mother Nature change the world right before our eyes. Golds deepen. Amber glows. Rich browns settle in. We stop, take pictures, and call it beautiful.

Let’s bring that same wonder to the products we use.

Vanilla has a beautiful story to tell, and sometimes, it tells it through color.

Vanillin, a compound found in vanilla, can gradually deepen the color of a formula. Candle wax may turn golden or softly tan. Soaps and lotions may develop warm brown tones. Oils may become richer shades of amber.

We embrace those colors. Every golden drop. Every warm shade. Every little reminder that ingredients have their own character.

Could we try to keep certain formulas their original color? Yes. Color stabilizers can help in some products. But we don’t feel the need to add something solely to keep an expected vanilla color change from showing.

In fact, we might question a product that smells like vanilla but never changes color. What’s in there? What was added to keep the formula looking exactly the same?

White isn’t the definition of beautiful. Uniform isn’t the definition of quality.

There is beauty in understanding what you’re holding. In knowing why that shade has deepened. In appreciating a formula beyond the color you first saw.

At ‘Ike Loa, we want you to feel connected to your products. To be curious about their ingredients. To understand the purpose behind what goes into them and appreciate the character that comes with them.

An expected color change from vanillin is something we can explain with confidence and embrace with pride.

Because beauty has never belonged to just one color.
