Most locals know Jasper's for its cheap beer, bad company, excellent sound system, and pool table. But for a growing Tribe of Open Water Swimmers and Winter Swimmers, who regularly make the pilgrimage to Newport to swim the waters of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, Jasper's has become their gathering spot. A meet up when they hit down, while they're here and before they head out. A couple of years ago Kathleene Marcil and Nadine Bennet started a tradition, that when a swimmer swims the length of the lake In Search of Memphre they can sign the ceiling above the bar. Here's a link to some photos of the many ceiling signings this past year, when 8 swimmers swam the length of the lake and two more double crossed.
