A flaky scalp does NOT automatically mean dandruff.
And dandruff is NOT always Seborrheic dermatitis. 👀

A lot of people lump every itchy, flaky scalp condition into the same category, but the causes, symptoms, and care approaches can be very different.

This week we’re diving deeper into:
✨ What Seborrheic dermatitis actually is
✨ How it differs from dandruff
✨ Signs people often overlook
✨ Why some “dry scalp” routines make it worse
✨ How buildup, oils, inflammation, and yeast can all play a role
✨ When it may be time to seek professional help

Because understanding your scalp matters just as much as understanding your hair.

And trust me… some of y’all have been calling everything “dry scalp” for YEARS. 🥴💜

Every flake is NOT dandruff. 👀❄️

Some flakes are dusty and snowy like classic dandruff… while others may be product buildup, dry scalp, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or other scalp concerns.

These images show examples of what dandruff DOES and DOESN’T look like so you can start learning the clues your scalp is giving you. 🧠🌿

Healthy hair starts with understanding your scalp. 💜

Girl… if your scalp looks like it’s snowing, it may be dandruff, not just “dry scalp.” 🌨️

Swipe through to learn what dandruff is, what may trigger it, how to support your scalp, and when it may be time to see a dermatologist.

💜 Main Takeaways From This Week’s Dandruff Series

• Not every flaky scalp is simply “dry scalp”

• Dandruff usually involves fine white or yellow flakes and mild itching

•Dandruff is localized to the scalp only

• Product buildup, excess oil, stress, weather changes, and infrequent shampooing can make dandruff worse

• Consistent scalp care habits matter

• Keeping the scalp clean and reducing buildup can help support scalp health

• Some scalp symptoms may need professional evaluation

• Not all flakes are dandruff

Your scalp is leaving you clues. Learning how to read them can help you care for your hair and scalp more effectively. 🌿🧠

“Dry scalp” is often used as a blanket term, but your scalp may actually be dealing with buildup, dandruff, irritation, excess oil, or another underlying condition.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down common scalp concerns, what they look like, what may cause them, and simple ways to support scalp health.

This week, we’re starting with dandruff. What it is, what may trigger it, how to support your scalp, and when it may be time to see a dermatologist.

Be sure to follow along for more on dandruff and other scalp conditions.

Because when you understand what your scalp is trying to tell you, you can care for it more effectively. 🌿💜

I’m gonna love on you real hard when I say this… 💜

Don’t come asking why your hair feels dry and won’t act right if you haven’t shampooed it recently.

And when I say recently, I do NOT mean last month. 🥴

Especially if you’ve been:
• Co-washing only
• Reapplying leave-ins and stylers
• Layering oils and butters
• Greasing your scalp and hair
• Adding more product every few days

At some point, your hair stops being “thirsty” and starts drowning in product.

Shampooing is the foundation for hydration.

Read that again.

💧 Clean hair absorbs water better.
💧 Water is the true hydrator.
💧 Products work better on a clean foundation.

And when shampoo alone isn’t enough, it may be time for a hair detox to remove stubborn buildup and reset your strands.

Sometimes your products didn’t stop working.
Your hair just needs a proper cleanse.

Have you ever clarified or detoxed your hair and immediately noticed a difference? 👀

If your hair still feels dry after applying product after product, your hair may not be thirsty.

It may be wearing a raincoat. ☔

Buildup from oils, butters, conditioners, and hard water can coat the hair shaft and block moisture from getting in.

If your hair feels:

* Rough
* Waxy
* Heavy
* Dull
* Resistant to products

You may be dealing with buildup, not a lack of moisture.

Sometimes the answer isn’t more product.
Sometimes it’s removing what’s already there.

Your hair may not actually be dry.

Sometimes what feels like “dry hair” is actually product buildup.

When products begin sitting on the hair instead of absorbing, your hair can feel:
• dull
• coated
• itchy
• heavy
• like moisturizers have stopped working

And adding more products often makes the problem worse.

The good news? Once buildup is removed and your scalp is properly cleansed, your hair is often able to absorb moisture much more effectively.

Healthy hair starts with understanding what your hair actually needs.

Before pregnancy I was DEEP in product formulation mode 👀🧪

I have like 12 products in the vault ready to be finalized.

Which ones would y’all actually buy?

The Hair Detox Mask is a must.

And what products do you wish existed for natural hair that nobody is making? 👇🏽
