From my first birthday until my late teens/early 20s, my family held an annual reunion on the Rogue River. Life got busy and we missed a few years but we finally made it back for the first time since 2016. Lev slept through some rapids, Cedar provided commentary for frisbee golf and .zoiefox made sure to spray every family member she could with a water gun.

and I took a quick sibling trip to the Enchantments and Icicle Creek Canyon. We enjoyed wonderful hikes, alpine dips, and some time on the wall. Coming out of Colchuk we found ourselves extremely fortunate as 5 cars caught on fire in the parking lot and were burned completely, catching part of the nearby forest on fire. If not for quick responders, we have had a very long hike out.

Earned my sunburn as we climbed Unicorn Peak today near Mt. Rainer. I also dropped my phone in a stream and had to self-arrest more times than I can count while trying to figure out how to walk down a glacier. Great day of Type I fun!

Things we’ve learned about traveling international with kids:
1) Bed time doesn’t matter as long as they get good sleep/solid naps
2) Be outside as much as possible, everything can be overstimulating so it’s nice if they can have some space to just be them
3) Calories are more important than meals, so always have snacks
4) Normally we are a severely limited screen time family, but when staying in close quarters with limited toddler stimulation and 12+ hours outside planned, it’s okay if they watch a carton while the other one (or mom) sleeps
5) Bring clip cabinet safety locks/door k**b locks, grab an extra pair of everything, and try to stay near a washer/dryer
6) And last but definitely not least, the more family that comes along the better

Sea to Summit was a much easier hike before I was a dad. Thankfully and papa were able to help share the heavy toddler load and. assisted with some baby holds. We completed over nine miles and 2200+ elevation gain, Lev had his first popsicle and Cedar discovered she loved gondolas.

I love the little moments. Lev’s first ice cream. One on one chats between my first baby and his momma. Cedar figuring out how to splash in a pool of water. The smiles my second baby has when she hears my voice. We are very lucky people.

Crag babies are arguably cuter than standard babies. This one has been a champ watching everyone else (including brother and nana) take part in the climbing. Yesterday .zoiefox crushed a slab route that felt ridiculously difficult for the grade and then belayed both dad & Zoie (if asked even two weeks, I would have said I cannot my mom participating in outdoor climbing). I love family vacation.

We did end the day with some Type 2 fun in a dodgy trail, but we don’t talk about that…

Lev’s first day in Squamish was a smashing success! It was after bed time, he had already taken on some boulders plus did a little hiking. and then he was given the option to shower, eat, or climb and he chose climb. So we got all suited up only to discover that he didn’t like having a rope attached but loved wearing a helmet. Instead we finished the outdoor time with some barefoot boulders (he got about 2 meters off the ground unassisted). Finally crashed at 10 pm.
