The highball. Easily one of the most consumed styles of boozy beverage out there and often done so little justice! Take the humble whiskey soda, for example. I think back to my college days when I was slinging bottom shelf whiskey with soda from a gun that would always still have the residual flavors of Coke, Sprite, and cranberry, from previous pours. Ugh. But a highball done correctly is a delicious, simple treat!
came to me with their Club Soda No 1 and claims that they engineered the mineral content to elevate barrel-aged spirits, malt, peat, citrus, etc. Ultimately, they had a whiskey highball in mind and I was ready to put their claims to the test with no frills or flair -- just one of my favorite bourbons, Top Note No 1 Club Soda, perfect ice, and a twist of lemon. Here's what I learned:
The minerals they use definitely highlighted the wood and honey aroma and flavors of the bourbon. 👃
The high level of carbonation brought a lot of aroma to the surface and kept the highball fizzier for a long time, which I appreciate. 🙌
It made the lemon oil from the twist POP! 🍋 Especially halfway through the sip, the oils crescendo and keeps each sip ultra-bright.
This is definitely a whiskey drinker's soda water and makes a killer highball, but it also plays really well in Collins structures where citrus is a major component so there is a lot of versatility coming from a seemingly simple mixer. 🍹
One of my favorite things about the bottle itself is the fact all of Top Note's mixers are 8.5 ounces. I love a 2 oz spirit / 4 oz mixer pour in my highballs (gin-tonics, whiskey sodas, etc) and I can get 2 full servings from one bottle. In fact, they mark the halfway point on the label so you don't even have to guess! Ahhhh details details details make me happy!
Well played, Top Note 👏👏👏 And thanks for letting me go back to an awesome highball.
