Fun Fact π₯
We noticed our newest heifer was only sucking one quarter, which is normal for them to have a favorite! But, #28 has always had an excellent bag and production. I noticed the other quarters weren't getting suckled on, which this pressure can lead to issues! We immediately noted this problem, and into the chute she went.
Cows produces what is a called a Keratin Plug during their dry spell. This helps keep infection from entering the udder when not nursing a calf. Sometimes, that waxy plug can get extra thick and cause a blockage, especially with high producing cows. This isn't a big deal if noticed and fixed soon. After a little bit of work, we got all the wax cleaned and all quarters working perfectly. Momma was relieved, and relaxed completely with her head down and eyes closed as we worked the pressure off her bag.
Its always important to keep an eye on any cows bag, especially during the crucial start of a newborns life. Even a good quality cow can have few minor set backs that aren't problems till they are!
