Sometimes the most meaningful things start with a simple conversation.

We’re incredibly grateful to Runestone Ranch for seeing Max’s memorial patch hanging from our booth at the Tee It Up Golf Tournament, asking about the man behind it, and then suggesting something we never could have imagined, dedicating a cabin at Runestone Ranch in honor of Captain Vidal “Max” Fortuna.

As a first responder owned and operated business, this one is personal for Broken Compass Cantina. Max was a friend, a brother in the fire service, and someone whose memory deserves to continue forward.

Thank you to everyone at Runestone Ranch for the work you do supporting first responders and their families, and especially for giving Max’s legacy an opportunity to become part of that mission.

Now it’s our turn to help make it happen.

A day that forever changed our country and the fire service.

Today, we remember the 2,977 lives lost, including the 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 Port Authority Police officers, and all of the first responders who answered the call without hesitation.

We also remember those who returned home that day but carried the effects of 9/11 with them—and the many who have since lost their lives to illnesses connected to their service at Ground Zero.

For us at Broken Compass Cantina, our connection to the fire service runs deep. Today isn’t about business. It’s about remembering the courage, sacrifice, families, and brotherhood that define the first responder community.

We will never forget.
