Sometimes the most impactful design decision isn't what you add—it's what you remove.

"The most impactful resolution is subtraction. Removing unnecessary pieces makes what remains feel elevated and intentional."
— Philip Thomas Vanderford

In interior design, every piece should have a purpose. When we thoughtfully edit a space, the architecture, furnishings, artwork, and details are given room to breathe and be appreciated.

A well-designed home isn't about filling every corner. It's about creating balance, clarity, and a sense of calm through intentional choices.

Before purchasing something new, consider what could be removed instead. You may discover that the beauty of your home was there all along—just waiting to be revealed.

5 Common Decorating Mistakes We See Again and Again

Creating a beautiful home isn't about spending more—it's about making thoughtful decisions. Here are a few of the most common decorating mistakes homeowners make:

1️⃣ Buying everything at once
The most interesting homes evolve over time. Layering pieces gradually creates a collected, personal feel rather than a showroom look.

2️⃣ Choosing paint before furnishings
Paint is one of the easiest things to change. Start with your larger investments—furniture, rugs, and fabrics—then select a paint color that complements them.

3️⃣ Hanging artwork too high
Artwork should feel connected to the furniture below it. A good rule of thumb is to keep the center of the piece near eye level and proportionate to the space.

4️⃣ Ignoring scale and proportion
A room can have beautiful pieces but still feel "off" if they're the wrong size. Oversized rugs, properly scaled lighting, and furniture that fits the room make a tremendous difference.

5️⃣ Following trends instead of your lifestyle
The most successful interiors aren't designed for social media—they're designed for the people who live there every day. Function should always lead the design process.

The truth? Most decorating mistakes happen when decisions are made in isolation rather than as part of a larger plan.

Great design creates balance, flow, and purpose. It makes a home feel effortless, even though every detail has been thoughtfully considered.

What’s Your Design Aesthetic?

One of the first steps to creating a home you truly love is understanding your personal design style. If you're not sure where to start, ask yourself these questions:

✔️ Do you prefer clean lines or ornate details?
✔️ Are you drawn to light, airy spaces or rich, cozy rooms?
✔️ Do you love natural materials and textures, or sleek modern finishes?
✔️ What spaces do you save most often on Pinterest or Instagram?

Popular design aesthetics include:
Modern Farmhouse – Warm, inviting, and timeless
Contemporary – Clean, sophisticated, and current
Organic Modern – Natural textures paired with modern simplicity
Transitional – A balanced blend of traditional and contemporary
Eclectic – Curated collections that tell your story

My favorite tip? Start by collecting images you love without overthinking them. Patterns will emerge, and your unique style will begin to reveal itself.

Remember: your home doesn't have to fit into one design box. The best interiors reflect the people who live in them.

What design style best describes your home—or the home you wish you had? Tell us in the comments!

Your home, your retreat

Design is shifting beyond aesthetics — today, it’s about how your space makes you feel. The rise of wellness-focused interiors is redefining the home as a place to recharge, reset, and restore.

Searches for wellness rooms are up 164%, and it’s easy to see why. Homeowners are prioritizing calming environments, with “calming” design searches up 139% and biophilic design — bringing nature indoors — continuing to grow.

We’re also seeing a strong move toward spa-like living. From serene bathrooms and wet rooms to dedicated home gyms, yoga rooms, and even sensory spaces, homes are becoming personalized sanctuaries that support both physical and mental well-being.

At Knudson Interiors, we believe great design should do more than look beautiful — it should help you feel your best every day. We designed this home wellness center for our client in Aspen including a gym, steam, and massage room.

Let’s create a space that restores you.

Mochi The Mascot Found Her New Favorite Sofa

When iconic design meets undeniable comfort, even Mochi approves.

Meet the Harvey Probber Mayan Sofa from Restoration Hardware—a true statement piece that perfectly captures the bold expressiveness of 1980s postmodern design. Originally created by renowned American designer Harvey Probber, the Mayan Sofa is both sculptural and sophisticated, blurring the line between furniture and art.

Made in Italy and crafted with exceptional attention to detail, its architectural silhouette creates an unforgettable focal point while maintaining a sense of warmth and comfort.

What we love most about this piece:
Sculptural, gallery-worthy form
Timeless postmodern influence
Exceptional Italian craftsmanship
A conversation starter in any room
Surprisingly cozy (according to Mochi)

Great design should evoke emotion, tell a story, and invite you to stay awhile. The Harvey Probber Mayan Sofa does all three beautifully.

And if you're wondering whether it's comfortable enough for everyday living, Mochi has already claimed her spot.

Would you incorporate a sculptural statement sofa into your home?

Design isn’t just about what you see—it’s about what you feel.

It’s easy to choose pieces that look good in a moment. But the spaces that truly resonate are the ones created from connection—where every texture, color, and object reflects something personal.

When you design with your heart, your home becomes more than beautiful. It becomes meaningful.
It tells your story. It reflects your energy. It feels like you.

Because at the end of the day, great design isn’t about following rules or trends—it’s about creating a space that feels right the moment you walk in.

Design should do more than look beautiful — it should make you feel something.

The spaces we live in have the power to calm the nervous system, soften the noise of everyday life, and create moments of pause. From layered textures and natural light to thoughtful color palettes and collected pieces that tell a story, great design becomes a form of restoration. Art is nervous system regulation. It reduces cortisol and supports the parasympathetic nervous system, giving the body something to organize around.

At Knudson Interiors, we believe your home should feel like exhale energy. A place that grounds you, inspires you, and supports the way you want to live. The Ross Bleckner piece serves as a striking focal point, anchoring the breakfast nook with its layered, ethereal composition. Soft, diffused forms and circular motifs introduce a sense of movement and quiet intrigue, while subtle hints of teal punctuate the otherwise neutral palette—echoing the room’s refined tones without overpowering them. Positioned above the sculptural console, the artwork draws the eye upward, balancing the weight of the darker furnishings and adding an artful, contemplative dimension to the intimate dining space.

Because beautiful spaces aren’t just seen — they’re felt.

Lighting can change everything

Not all light is created equal — and the difference often comes down to beam angle.

From ultra-focused 8° spotlights that highlight a single piece of art, to 60° wide floods that softly illuminate an entire room, choosing the right beam angle is what takes a space from basic to beautifully layered.

Narrow beams (8°–15°): Perfect for accenting artwork, décor, and architectural details
Mid-range (24°–36°): Ideal for balanced, everyday lighting with a designer touch
Wide angles (45°–60°): Best for soft, ambient light that fills a space effortlessly

At Knudson Interiors, we don’t just design spaces — we design how they feel. And lighting is one of the most powerful tools to create depth, warmth, and intention in your home.

Ready to elevate your lighting design? Let’s create something stunning.

Flat, one-dimensional spaces are out — texture is in. We’re seeing a major shift toward materials that add depth, warmth, and character to every surface.

From the natural beauty of sandstone to the soft sophistication of linen and seagrass wallpaper, homeowners are craving spaces they can truly feel. Classic finishes like Venetian plaster and limewash paint are making a strong comeback, bringing that timeless, old-world charm into modern homes.

And it doesn’t stop at the walls — terracotta flooring is adding warmth underfoot, while details like wainscoting are elevating rooms with subtle architectural texture.

At Knudson Interiors, we love layering these elements to create spaces that feel rich, lived-in, and effortlessly elevated. We incorporated grass cloth wallcovering in this master bedroom in Hawaii.

Ready to bring texture into your home? Let’s design something unforgettable.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

At Knudson Interiors, we’re grateful for the homes we get to help create—spaces where memories are made, families gather, and life is lived fully. None of that would be possible without the courage and service of those we remember today.

Wishing you a meaningful Memorial Day spent with loved ones.
