The early days of The Wanderlust found us at The Market at Wild August, hosted by the lovely folks at local flower farm WildAugust Flower Farm.
Jennifer and Jimmy have turned their home into a beautiful little community every weekend, where local makers gather to share what they create with folks who come for locally grown flowers, good food, thoughtful gifts, and a little bit of connection. And somehow, they made space for us, too.
Often, Jennifer would effortlessly “throw together” a stunning arrangement for our bar. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way, but there is something about taking in flowers—beautifully, thoughtfully placed together—that just feeds my soul.
I would bring those flowers home after the market and enjoy them for as long as I could. And when I finally accepted that they were done, I’d toss their former glories off the front porch and into the yard and our mostly bare flower beds.
I’m notoriously bad at gardening. Anyone who knows us knows that The Wanderlust Custom Carpentry is the one who brings clearance plants back from the brink.
A few weeks ago, I noticed what I assumed was a stalky w**d growing alone in the flower bed.
I really need to get that outta here, I thought as I passed it again and again.
And then, last week, in the middle of a rather chaotic week, I paused long enough to notice something.
A little bit of fuchsia was poking out of the top.
I got closer and discovered a miracle: a cockscomb, my favorite kind of celosia, blooming right there in front of me.
Somehow, the castaways of my favorite flowers had decided to call my home their home.
And maybe that’s why we believe so much in pausing. In taking the time to notice. In accepting beauty wherever it offers itself to us.
We believe that even withered flowers can produce life and beauty.
We believe in gratitude for friends like Jennifer and Jimmy, who share what their fields yield and, in doing so, bring a little more beauty into our corner of the world.
And we hope you’re inspired today to pause.
To notice.
To hope.
The Wanderlust loves you. 🥂
