"Ca’Rugate San Michele Soave Classico 2016"
Italy, abv 12%
White wines featuring good acidity, as well as stainless steel or minimal oak aging, are always great for the summer time when weather is typically warm. San Michele Soave Classico is a perfect white wine for hot days and summer fare. This wine is made in the Soave region of Northeastern Italy and is 100% Garganega, a Native Italian white grape varietal. San Michele Soave Classico can be served chilled due to its light body, fresh fruit flavors, and crispness.
In the glass, the colors are straw yellow with hints of gold. This wine moves with ease around the glass (an indication of its lighter body) but still produces relatively thick tears upon settling. On the nose, there are pleasant aromas of honeydew melon, pineapple, lemon zest, and subtle floral notes. On the palate, there is a richness that balances the acidity of the wine. The attack is very clean and crisp, opening with citrus notes, particularly orange, that transition to golden apple and ripe pineapple at the mid-palate. The finish is medium in length and accompanied by almond and soft herbal notes, as well as some flavors reminiscent of a mixed fruit cup.
San Michele Soave Classico is a great wine for leisurely sips on a warm day. However, this wine pairs well with lighter food fare such as summer vegetables and shellfish. Some suggested food pairings are as follows:
• Roasted asparagus finished with garlic, lemon, and shaved Parmesan
• Grilled shellfish (like shrimp skewers) or seafood pasta (such as scallop or crab linguini)
• White pizza topped with roasted tomatoes, clams, and pancetta, finished with fresh herbs
San Michele Soave Classico has some oak aging, which drives tertiary flavors in the wine, such as nuttiness.
Cigar pairings should be mild only, (think “Connecticut shade wrappers”) with subtle pepper, sweet, floral, and/or nutty flavors. Ci**rs that are medium or full bodied would overpower the fruitiness and delicate flavors of this light bodied wine.
