Wow, I just cannot get over how awesome this is. Paige was asked to do career day at her son’s elementary school. Paige took it upon herself to leave a lasting impression on these kids…. She made a board, passed out stickers (which the kids put on their desks, and did a presentation on growing food.
Not only were the kids complelty engaged for this session, they asked a ton of questions. Going way over the allotted time Paige was allowed.
The next day Paige found out that a good majority of the kids said they wanted to grow up to be farmers!!!
GUYS!!! THIS IS SIMPLY AMAZING!!! This is exactly what we need in order to sustain a healthy food system. With the average aged farmer being 54 years old. The USA needs younger growers to jump in here and get the job done. It’s already an extremely hard job, extremely undervalued, yet extremely important. It’s not taught or talked about enough in our current school systems, and that’s needs to change fast, like very fast.
Sure the kids are are 6-7 years old, and just excited, but hopefully Paige’s presentation will stick with them. That lasting impression on a developing mind is very important. I’ve always wondered why in American public school systems why gardening is taught. Anyone know why? It would be so easy…. K-5 helps with germination and early plant development, while middle school works on the growing and harvesting, and by high school your working on insect and pathogen control. Sales, marketing, the whole works.
The state of or food supply is very very fragile. Please get out there and learn to grow your own food. Teach your kids this stuff, the system will not. What’s that old proverb? “You’re never truly free till you grow your own food” something like that I guess.
Anyways, cheers to kids and cheers to Paige!!
