Our kitchen was tiled entirely by hand by LuRu. Retro aqua mid-century on the walls. Then there is the backsplash — an astronaut, a rocket, three alien planets. Friday at Hukilau, LuRu led a Trobriand shield painting workshop with about 25 attendees. She walked them through the history and meaning behind Trobriand shield art, demonstrated the techniques, and spent the session hands-on with every student.
The completed shields were extraordinary. Every person walked away with something genuinely beautiful that they made themselves.

What a day at Hukilau.
LuRu led a Trobriand shield making workshop and helped Tom Fowner run his palm frond hat making workshop. I had the privilege of serving cocktails for the Kaona Room Hiden tiki bar. We met so many wonderful new members of the ohana.
Then we came home to find our t-shirts waiting on the porch. Just in time.

Introducing Chill-Leis.
LuRu designs and hand-assembles each one — layers of tropical flowers, leaves, and wooden beads wrapped around a rechargeable neck fan. The result is a wearable piece of art that also keeps you cool. No two are exactly alike.
Because Florida summers are not for the weak and neither is tiki culture.

Orgeat is one of those ingredients the tiki community loves to argue about. I have made the elaborate versions. Then I landed on this: almond milk, turbinado sugar, almond extract, and orange flower water. Four ingredients. Stands up to every version I have tried.
Home bartending should be fun. One more thing: label your bottles before they go in the fridge. Made orgeat and fresh lime juice last night, put them in the fridge and@ went to bed. Two mystery bottles this morning and the labels will not stick to cold glass, probablythe immediate condensation. You are welcome. 🦈

When we bought this house, the side yard was a chain link fence and a patch of grass. What you see now is years of work — LuRu and Don, weekends and evenings, concrete and palm fronds and a whole lot of tropical plants. The tiki hut is back there. The bar is inside it. You cannot see any of it from the street, and that is exactly how we like it. 🌙🦈

Fresh lime juice makes a real difference in a cocktail. The question is how much patience you have. We needed juice for a batch of clarified Mai Tais. The hand squeezer was not going to get us there. The electric juicer got through 3 dozen limes in about 20 minutes. The right tool changes everything. Home bartending should be fun. 🦈
