While in Belfast, Blake went to several classic bars including the beautiful Crown Liquor Saloon to enjoy Guinness, Gin & Tonics, and a cask ale. Then it was the award-winning Cocktail Bar at the Merchants Hotel where the founders of the Dead Rabbit got their start before moving to the United States. He also did a whiskey tasting at Titanic Distillers located at the site of the drydock where the Titanic was constructed. Along the way, he had a happy hour Havana Club daiquiri at a Cuban restaurant and a pint at Madden’s Pub.

We went to the Re:Mix cocktail contest last night at Mother’s Ruin where local bartenders made welcome cocktails using Ford’s Gin and the top two advanced to a Chopped-style live cocktail competition. It was a great evening with gin cocktails, live music, and a great crowd.

We arrived in Charleston the day before the Mother’s Ruin Challenge back in May and headed to High Wire Distilling from the airport. High Wire makes their bourbons with the heirloom Jimmy Red Corn variety and their rye whiskies with heirloom Abruzzi Rye, so their commitment to these heirloom grains helps set their whiskies apart. We tasted all their whiskies as well as their gin and amaro. The Peach Brandy Cask Finish Bourbon was a real treat and its inclusion in their Dramatic Fashion cocktail made it one of our favorite cocktails of the year so far. While we have fat washed bourbon with Benton’s bacon before, High Wire has a bourbon where the Jimmy Red Corn is placed in the smokehouse alongside Benton’s hams and bacon to give the whiskey a smoky and meaty flavor. A wonderful experience all around!

Back at the beginning of May, we went to Kentucky Artisan Distillery, a contract distiller outside Louisville most famous for distilling for the Jefferson’s Bourbon brand.

On our trip to Bardstown at the beginning of May, we got to take a tour of the new Heaven Hill Springs distillery opened in late 2025. Since the tragic 1996 fire, Heaven Hill has not distilled in Bardstown, but this new distillery marks the company’s return to distilling in the city as well as expanding its production capacity on top of their Bernheim distillery in the Louisville area. We were especially struck at what a modern, large-scale distillery looked like because most modern distilleries we have visited are craft size and most large distilleries are older and have evolved over the years. Heaven Hill has positioned itself well for the future with plenty of room to grow.

Step back behind the bar for a coast-to-coast journey through America’s cocktail history at All-American Cocktails Vol. 2 at Boardable 615 on Saturday, June 27 at 6pm.

This hands-on cocktail class explores the distinctive regional traditions that helped shape American drinking culture — from the elegant classics of the Northeast to the tropical flavors of Hawaii, the creamy after-dinner drinks of the Midwest, and the punch traditions of the South.

Your $85 ticket includes a welcome Chatham Artillery Punch before participants learn to make three iconic cocktails:
 • The Ward Eight — a bold whiskey classic from Boston
 • The Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai — a tropical island riff on the tiki favorite
 • The Pink Squirrel — the beloved Midwest ice cream-parlor cocktail turned supper club staple

Along the way, we’ll dive into the stories, ingredients, and regional influences that made these drinks enduring American classics. Guests will receive hands-on instruction while learning techniques, cocktail history, and flavor balancing in a relaxed, interactive setting.

Light bites will be provided — making this the perfect summer date night, group outing, or cocktail adventure for curious drinkers. Get your tickets now at boardable615.com.
