Today we recognize and celebrate Lieutenant Mike Burelson’s incredible career as one of our own hangs up the helmet after 23 years of service.

Over more than two decades in the fire service, he served our community and this profession in countless ways — as a Lieutenant, Engineer, member of the Technical Rescue Team and USAR Team, Training Captain, and Fire Academy Cadre helping shape the next generation of firefighters

His impact extends far beyond calls answered. Through leadership, mentorship, training, and a commitment to excellence, he helped build stronger firefighters and a stronger department.

The knowledge shared, standards set, and people developed throughout your career will continue to carry forward long after today.

Congratulations on your retirement and thank you for 23 years of dedication, sacrifice, and service.

Enjoy the next chapter — you’ve earned it.

When the call comes from the top floor, there’s no room for hesitation.

Our crews recently conducted high-rise fire training, sharpening the skills needed for some of the most demanding fireground operations — stairwell advancement, standpipe operations, hose management, and fire attack in multi-story buildings.

Reps are built in training so performance is automatic on game day.

Today, we join our brothers and sisters at the North Metro Fire Rescue District in mourning the loss of Lieutenant Chad Tellinger.

Lieutenant Tellinger dedicated more than 27 years of service to his community, his department, and the fire service. We honor Lt. Tellinger’s commitment, sacrifice, and service to the citizens he proudly protected throughout his career.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the members of North Metro during this incredibly difficult time.

This week, members of the Longmont firefighters union trained on trench rescue operations — one of the most dangerous and technical rescue environments we face. From shoring systems and victim packaging to scene safety and coordinated extrication, these evolutions sharpen the skills needed for low-frequency, but high-risk emergencies.

Around 3:04 p.m. Tuesday, Longmont firefighters responded to a reported grass fire near the intersection of First Avenue and Martin Street, in the area of the city’s Waste Diversion Center. Crews arrived quickly and worked to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures and critical infrastructure.

The fire is believed to have started near a recycling area and railroad tracks, not far from the city’s wastewater facility. No injuries were reported, and crews remained on scene for mop-up operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

This incident highlights the importance of the wildland training our members have been conducting—preparing for fast-moving fires, managing spot fire potential, and operating effectively during Colorado’s drought conditions and frequent red flag days.

With Colorado facing ongoing drought conditions and frequent red flag days, Longmont firefighters are putting in the work to stay ready. This week, crews conducted wildland training in a simulated burn scenario, working a roughly acre-sized fire that included a developing spot fire.

Firefighters deployed progressive hose packs to rapidly advance lines, focusing on coordinated suppression tactics, communication, and maintaining control as conditions evolved.

The training also included a medical component, reinforcing our ability to care for our own on these wildfire scenes.

Late yesterday evening, Longmont fire crews responded to a fire alarm in the 2000 block of Main Street. Shortly after units arrived, first in companies upgraded it to a structure fire response around 8:46 p.m. Crews worked quickly to control the fire, keeping it contained to its room of origin. Firefighters were able to bring the situation under control in about 25 minutes.

The cause of this fire is still under investigation.

Strong work by our firefighters on scene.
