I started woodturning after an unexpected balance disorder forced me to retire from working. My Uncle in Owensboro had shown me his shop when I was younger and I liked working with wood. I called my Aunt who was moving out of state and asked could I have Uncle John’s lathe. I took classes at a shop in Lexington and went to auctions to purchase the various tools and other items needed to complete a
project. That started this new path of a hobby and extra income. Working with the many types of woods, including the traditional Oak, Walnut and Maple are great. I especially like working with Splatted Maple and Color Grain Woods. I also work with Bethlehem Olivewood from the Holy Land and Jack Daniel’s Bourbon barrel wood. There also are numerous Exotic Hardwood such as Red and Purple Heart, Paduak, Zebrawood and Tulipwood available and present their own unique challenge. A new avenue is the Acrylics: There is a wide range of color combinations that include KY blue and purple crush to name a few. This also offers me the chance to offer my products in Military colors, like Desert Camo, Woodland Camo and Navy Camo. I offer the traditional slimline pen, stylus pen, comfort pen and a very poplar Bolt Action Pen. This pen has Patriotic Etch God Bless America and the Statue of Liberty on it. I do custom orders- where people send me there Family’s Tobacco Sticks and I convert them into pens or whatever the customer’s needs. I also can do Deer Antlers, but we must have a certain size to use customer own deer antlers.
