Two years ago, Drs. Jilian and Vince moved to Key Biscayne with their adorable kids, and they immediately became part of the Vinya family. Whether they’re joining us for dinner or swinging by for a quick chit-chat, it always makes us happy to see them walk through our doors.

This week Vince headed-off to serve our country as a trauma surgeon in a faraway place. We’re grateful for his service and sacrifice.

Spin the Bottle: Spain!

Ashlie picked this beauty by Abadal winery. Also known as Garró, the Mandó variety was close to extinction, saved by a few growers in Catalonia who recognized the grape’s bigtime fruity aromas and its ability to adapt to escalating heat. Located about a forty-minute drive north of Barcelona, Valentí Roqueta grew-up in the serene forest of the Pla de Bages wine region. He founded Abadal in 1983 on the land surrounding his family’s farmhouse. Since then, Roqueta has been a guiding light, helping to establish the region as a D.O. (in 1995) and giving indigenous grapes a world stage. Light, berry tart, and “Beaujolais” like, It feels kind-of French and not very Spanish, something, uniquely Catalan!

I visited Acústic Celler in 2009, and at the time, had carried the wines on my list. Then, sadly, their importer passed away, and the wines disappeared from the market for a long stretch. One Monday morning, my friend Alejandro stopped by with a bag of “new” wines to taste. As he unpacked the bottles, out came Acústic. There was my old friend.

Wrapping around the more famous Priorat region in a horseshoe shape, Montsant remains one of Spain’s most underrated places for old-vine Garnatxa and Carinyena. What I love about this red is that it’s unusually Carinyena forward, showing off its darkest-of-dark red fruits and exotic spice. Then, beneath the fruit, the rugged terroir reveals pitch-black jellies of melted stone. A supremely tasty wine for under $30, keep Montsant and Acústic Celler on your drinking radar. ~Allegra A

Originally from Lima, Luis joined us from La Mar at the Mandarin Oriental (and btw, he still makes a killer Pisco Sour). When we opened our bar in 2021, Luis was there from day one, showing up with kindness, tasty drinks, and old-school hospitality. Congrats to Luis on the Big 5! We’re happy you’re here.

Meet Vincent — our very first customer in Key Biscayne in May 2020, when we were still operating in the dark & dusty shadows of “Stefano’s.” He walked in with his Belgian father, carrying a few bottles of Fattoria del Pino Brunello di Montalcino (2014) and offered to trade. Who is this slim-jim stranger strolling in with flipflops and bottles to trade? Of course, we said yes, and Vincent has been part of our family ever since. Enter Ana — fellow Miamian, artsy “Key Rat,” longtime buddy to Vincent, and one of our favorite Brazilians (shh!). They have that cool brother-sister friendship which everyone pines for.

We love Vincent. We love Ana. And this bar is better with them.
