As a mom of two, raising kids that will be entering an AI job market, I am not raising kids who will compete with AI. I am raising kids that AI cannot replace.
The loss of soft skills terrifies me. I actually lose sleep over this because I notice it in a lot of young adults. It’s why I’ve also chosen to double down on these 3 things that I think can really help all kids compete in an AI market.
1. Focusing on human skills like empathy, active listening, conflict resolution, and collaboration. These skills show up in every career, at every level, and they only get more valuable as AI handles more of the routine work. Communication is essential for human interaction.
2. Building Critical Thinkers. I am curious by nature so this has always been a little bit of my default parenting. Encourage your kids to challenge assumptions, evaluate sources, debate ideas, and connect dots across different subjects will give them the confidence to walk into any situation. You can build this at home through dinner table debates, letting them solve real problems (budgeting for a family trip, planning an event)
3. Raising Adaptable Learners. The jobs our kids will have don’t even exist yet, so the real skill is learning how to learn. Expose them to new experiences, let them fail and pivot, and normalize the idea that skills need constant updating. kids who are comfortable with change will thrive where others freeze.
