TWELVE YEARS
12 years ago on February 13, 2013 we signed our lease here in S. Windermere. As our twelfth year at our last standing restaurant comes to a close, we have decided to also close our doors and say goodbye to our final burrito shop.
Nick hired me at the downtown Yo Burrito in 2006 and since then, we have had 4 Yo Burritos, 3 Yo Bo Cantinas, 2 babies, 1 El Camino (who remembers?) and sold over 2,000,000 burritos (yea, 2 million).
The Charleston restaurant culture captured me fresh out of college, brought me to present day, and filled me with memories that would take too long to recount here. I started working under Annie Bass, Spencer, & Keith and side by side next to Tom Leonczyk. Then opened new stores with Ford Tanner, Garrison Norris, Sean Catenacci, & Kay Kay Uhde. We hired legendary servers like Ali Burkey, Bre Flannery, Laura Sparrow, Caitlin Howard, Abby Pease & Laura Svendsen. I couldn’t have done the last stretch without Mary Patrick & Daisy Rodriguez. We are overlapping generations of staff but also intertwined, bonded, and connected through this company. We made memories, forged friendships, mixed countless Mason jar margaritas, and consumed an unbelievable amount of tequila. Seriously, is everyone ok?!
We have cooked, cleaned, snacked, drank, laughed, cried, fought, hugged. We have cut ourselves, burned ourselves, been broken into & robbed. We have fired, hired, struggled, succeeded. We have created & created & created, for TWENTY FIVE years. We are Charleston’s best burrito restaurant - home to the Mason Jar Margarita - the motliest of crews. We are a place that I proudly call mine.
We are here because Nick Powers opened the doors at Yo Burrito © 2000 and I wouldn’t change a thing. Most of you reading this probably worked here. Maybe you have eaten here or maybe you’ve ripped a shot of tequila here. If you are reading this, we love you. If you worked here, we are proud of you. We miss you all. We want to see you before it’s over.
LONG LIVE OUR MEMORIES TOGETHER & thank you Charleston- you’ve made my life.
