White Oak Oyster Company has big news to share: we’ve officially moved to Swansboro!
For those of you who have followed our oyster farm since its inception, you know that we started this passion project while living in Durham full time. For the past seven years, Benjy has travelled back and forth, to and from Swansboro, nearly weekly to grow and sustain this farm. His parents, who retired in Swansboro, have been so generous to house and feed us over the years and fill in so many little gaps, whether it was to stock the fridge, troubleshoot an error message, or coordinate an oyster pick-up.
Last fall, as the operations continued to grow, Benjy began traveling down twice a week for a period of time. At that point, especially with two young toddlers at home, we knew we had hit an inflection point. We knew the traveling was not sustainable and began planning for a permanent move to Swansboro and orchestrating all of the finer details that come along with a family move.
As of this past weekend, we are officially full-time Swansboro residents! And even in this first week, Benjy has already been able to increase his time on the farm, and the kids have enjoyed being in the mix of it all. This move has been a big step towards the growth of our family farm. We have gained the added flexibility that will allow us to explore future opportunities with local partners.
As always, we know that this farm couldn’t have been successful without the early support of our Durham customers who came out weekly to the South Durham Farmers' Market to purchase our product as we were getting our feet wet and harvesting our initial batches. It’s been a few years since we’ve had a stand at the farmers markets, but we will continue to supply Locals Seafood who has a presence at local farmers markets in the Triangle area.
As for our Swansboro clients, we will now be able to regularly stock Swansboro Front Street Grocery as well as our self-serve fridge at Captain’s Choice Seafood Market. We just dropped off eight bags at Captain’s Choice this morning and are enjoying the convenience of supplying our local market while living in town.
More to come as we get settled in…
Onwards and upwards!
