The CrossFit Open is just around the corner. Not sure what the open is? Well, in addition to being the road to the Games for a select group of high level CrossFitters, it is the yearly test of mettle for us common folk. An Online competition,
It’s just around the corner and we are excited for the return of the Open. We are also a little bit nervous because of all of the changes, and with changes we thought this year would be a good time to try something different. After all, you can’t stay around by doing the same thing for 14 years. Right?
So, to make the classic CrossFit five-week test of fitness, CFSJ is overlaying a team competition to the Open. Don’t worry if it is your first Open or that you have not been doing CrossFit that long. Everyone can help their team win and, ultimately have a lot of fun in the process with really little more work than doing the Open WODS.
So here is the breakdown:
Feb 8-12th Team Captains will be nominated and chosen. These are people that will rally the teams. The chief requirement is fun. Their primary responsibility is to keep the team having fun through text, Facebook, etc. If you know someone like this, please let a coach know.
Feb 15th (at Adult Swim) everyone registered for the Open will be put into a lottery style draft. If you sign up for the Open, you don’t have to do anything else. We will pick the athletes at random.
Feb 21st The First WOD Announcement. Come to the Box and we will share in the anxiety. It will give all team members a chance to meet.
Feb 22nd. The first Friday Night Light. We will be running the Open Wods with heats and scoring at 5:00 PM on.
FAQ:s. Inevitably there will be some hesitation due to some of this being an unknown, so here is a list of anticipated frequently asked questions:
How does a team win? Just get your team members to complete the Open Workouts. It doesn’t matter your placing in the workout, as long as you complete it. The team will get 1 point for each member that completes the workout. In addition there are 3 point awards for the top 3 males and females in the gym on any given Wod. There will also be a weekly “Spirit of the Open” award that will land a lucky team an additional 5 points. This award will be explained at the first workout.
What if I have never done the Open? You have to start somewhere, and you have us to get you to get you through it. Just sign up at http://games.crossfit.com before the draft on the 15th.
What if I think I am going to make the Games this year? Don’t laugh, it has happened four times with athletes at CFSJ (Marnel King x2, Ashley Carriveau and Tim Lyons) . The answer is participating in this team event will not change anything about how you would normally do the open.
What if I cannot make it to the Friday night event? Not a problem. If you find time to complete the workout between Thursday night and Monday at 5PM, your team will get a point for your participation.
What if I don’t want to be on a team but I want to do the Open? (I know, there will be at least one, but they are still CFSJ Fam.). So, again, no problem. Do your workout, submit your score, and the team that was supposed to have you on it will get a point for your commitment to individualism.
