Join us at Bar Laika on Wednesday, March 25 from 6pm for the thirtieth edition of Playback with Selwa Abd.
Selwa Abd is a Moroccan-born, New York–based interdisciplinary artist, composer, and design researcher working as Bergsonist. Her media, sound, and performance-based practice reconfigures archival and found materials into immersive environments. Drawing on electroacoustic and musique concrète traditions, she employs granular and spectral techniques to explore postcolonial identity, techno-futurism, and the psychological edges of virtuality. Abd has presented work at Roulette, ISSUE Project Room, MoMA PS1, Brooklyn Film Festival and MUTEK, and has been featured in BOMB Magazine, The Washington Post, GQ, and NPR. She has received support from NYSCA x Roulette, NYFA x Mayor’s Office for Entertainment’s Women’s Fund for Women, the Jerome Hill Artist Program, Issue Project Room, and Harvestworks. Her discography spans more than a decade, with releases on labels including Optimo Music, Borft, Columbia Records, and a forthcoming album on Dark Entries. Abd is also the founder of the opportunity resource Pick Up The Flow, the imprint bizaarbazaar and has been a resident DJ on NTS Radio since 2018.
Playback is a series of informal listening events curated by Kamran Sadeghi where record labels, musicians, composers, and producers feature recordings from their catalog, and premiere album pre-releases, archives, and other rarities.
