Our book Carlson on Evidence was cited authoritatively in its 55th Georgia appellate opinion this past week!
The unanimous decision in Jernigan v. State, A20A0924 (October 6, 2020), was authored by Presiding Judge Stephen Louis A. Dillard, joined by Judges Brain M. Rickman and E. Trenton Brown III, of the Georgia Court of Appeals.

A message from CoE author Mike Carlson:

Deeply honored and utterly humbled to receive the Eagle Award from Georgia's United States Attorneys Bobby Christine (Southern District), Charlie Peeler (Middle District), and BJay Pak (Northern District).

The presentation was this week at a reception held by Georgia’s USA’s in conjunction with the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council’s Summer Conference and host DA Jackie Johnson (Brunswick, J.C.).

It was tremendous to receive this honor from such dedicated public servants and preeminent legal figures as our Georgia USA's and to have done so in in the presence of so many friends and colleagues.

Heartfelt thanks to USA’s Christine, Pak, and Peeler and all of those whose support over the years made receiving this inspiring career recognition possible.

The Eagle Award’s inscription reads as follows:

Congratulations to John Melvin, a true servant to the community and a good friend to all of us here at Carlson on Evidence.

The GBI welcomes John Melvin as Chief of Staff.

John has been a prosecutor for 25 years. Prior to coming to the GBI, he was the Chief Assistant District Attorney in Cobb County. His last several years of prosecution have specialized in Racketeering cases under the Georgia RICO statute. Utilizing that statute, he handled some of the largest cases in state history to include the largest Elder Financial Abuse case involving more than 12 million dollars and the largest state tax fraud cases involving more than 3000 victims. Many agents may know him from his work against sovereign citizens, pill mills, and gambling operations.

Finally, John is an Adjunct Professor of Law at John Marshall Law School teaching Trial Practice. He previously served as an Adjunct for Emory Law School teaching Criminal Procedure and Advanced Evidence.

A native of Atlanta, John graduated high school in DeKalb County in 1982 and then attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and the University of Georgia.

Carlsons take Evidence Lecture to Iowa

UGA Callaway Chair of Law Emeritus Ronald L. Carlson and Cobb County Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Scott Carlson presented "Evidence in Action: Critical Issues in Federal and Iowa Evidence" at the 2018 meeting of the Iowa State Bar Association last Wednesday, June 20th in Des Moines. The Carlsons’ expertise in the the rules of evidence and trial strategies continues to be widely sought after in multiple states.

On Wednesday, the Carlsons presented a lecture based on cross-examination under the Iowa and Eighth Circuit rules. As an added bonus, some of Prof. Carlson’s former students from his days as faculty at the University of Iowa School of Law were in attendance, as was highly-respected Drake University law professor, Alan Vestal. Special thanks to Des Moines attorney Lu Ann White of Lederer Weston Craig PLC and Christy Cronin of the Iowa State Bar Association for all of their efforts in making this appearance such a success.
