What's in a name?

Milou is one of our very first collaboration projects - established the same year Valkyrie was founded, 2011. The name MILOU is from the Belgian comic TinTin. I had this excellent French teacher, Monsieur Romare, in 11th grade, who opted not to use textbooks, so instead, we watched films, listened to music, and read books. Occasionally, we would walk to Thayer Street to the French cafe where we could have conversations, coffee, and he even let us smoke ci******es (so European!). So that is when I read TinTin - and loved his dog's character (named Milou - the point of all this) -- loyal, a bit mischievous, fond of booze, deathly afraid of spiders.

Bulle de Comptoir #13 "Cuisine du Dimanche"

Charles Dufour farms six certified organic hectares in Landreville, Essoyes, and Celles-sur-Ource in the Côtes des Bars, some of which were planted by his grandfather. A one-man show - grower, winemaker, owner - Charles has been referred to as “the Selosse of the Aube” and Bulles de Comptoir, the house pour at NOMA. After learning about winemaking from his father, he spent some time abroad and returned to Champagne to take over the estate, converting to organic viticulture, which was certified in 2010. He has become somewhat of a cult superstar in the organic/natural winemaking scene and his wines are made in small quantities, nearly impossible to find.

The 2024 Violet Hill hails from two distinct growing regions in the Willamette Valley. Most of the fruit (80%) is from three contiguous vineyards in the foothills of the Santium Pass, planted to various clones on primarily volcanic soils (Ancient Jory). This area is the gateway to the Cascade Mountain Range, where the south-facing, high-elevation vines (1000ft) can struggle to ripen. In warm vintages like 2024, the natural acidity and resulting structure are stunning. The other component of the blend is fruit from the Roe & Roe vineyard in Ribbon Ridge AVA, which is the polar opposite regarding ripeness and total degree days, yielding opulent, juicy grapes.
