Long-awaited by mid-island residents, the marina’s boardwalk has come alive and promises to be a unique place to drink and dine ‘à la St Tropez’. We started our ‘marina evening’ at The Speakeasy – a name that conjures up 1920s-30s prohibition in the USA, when alcohol was illegal. Speakeasies blossomed and, unlike the traditional bars, welcomed men and women who wanted a few drinks, to listen to li

ve music and to dance. Well, originally it was because pre-prohibition unlicensed USA bartenders would tell their customers to “speak easy” when ordering their alcohol. Of course, there’s nothing dodgy about Phuket’s Speakeasy at Royal Phuket Marina’s boardwalk – but it does conjure up images of an Al Capone hangout; you almost expect Eliot Ness and his ‘Untouchables’ to burst through the doors.
