Mercegrace Raquel’s national costume is a stylized Balintawak dress. As Fernando Amorsolo commonly portrayed women working in rice fields wearing this style, Song Medina deemed it appropriate for Mercegrace to wear the Balintawak Dress for the Binibining Pilipinas national costume competition as it very well represents her as a lass from Nueva Ecija-the rice granary of the Philippines. The inclusion of the lace mantilla, rosary necklace and abaniko gives the ensemble an old world conservative feel that very well reflects Mercegrace’s upbringing in the province.
The top is made of cotton silk fabric with floral embroidery while the tapis is a play of assorted fabric textures and colors sewn in as square cut-outs to form a checkered pattern. The peeping skirt is French tulle.
This costume epitomizes Filipina costuming sense of rural roots.
