It was built in 1539 on the palace of the Inca Viracocha, Suntur Wasi, and provisionally served as the Cathedral of the city.

Fray Vicente Valverde placed the cross he had brought from Spain, which is known as the Cross of the Conquest, in the main altar of the temple.

The image of our Lady of the Assumption was also placed in memory of the victory of the Spaniards over Manco Inca in 1536, where the denomination of “El Triunfo” ( the triumph) comes from.

In its Crypt, part of the mortal remains of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega have been deposited since 1978.

EARTHQUAKES
In 1950 Cusco had a very destructive earthquake that damaged more than 50% of the buildings and homes of the city.

The church of Santo Domingo was the temple that suffered the most serious damage in the city. The arches of the tower collapsed, the northwest angle tilted outward, the apse wall cracked and the balcony overlooking the city fell. In the cloister, all the arches were unbalanced so that all the rooms on the second floor were uninhabitable.

BUT THEN SOMETHING AMAZING HAPPENED!!

Most of the spanish structures fell down and behind those colonial painted plaster walls, the intact stone walls of the ancient Inca Temple of Qoriqancha (golden temple) appeared, walls that were unknown or hidden for centuries.

After this event, the plan was to restore these few archeological remains, that were not destroyed during the conquest to build this church.
And you can visit them now 😎

Right in front of the entrance you can visit as well the Store of INKA TREASURE , beautiful jewelry inspired in the ancient treasures from this Inca Temple.

TEMPLO DE LA COMPAÑÍA DE JESÚS
Considered one of the most beautiful baroque temples in all America.
It was built on the ancient temple of Amaru Kancha ( house of the great serpent) constructed by the Inca Huayna Capac.
The chronicles say that it was destined as the abode of a very large and fierce snake 🐍 that an Inca monarch would have brought from his conquests in the jungle, east of Cusco. It was probably an Anaconda wich they fed with many llamas 🦙 🦙 and some other animals.
Currently you can see sculpted in relief, on the stones of its walls, the figures of snakes.
The land was donated to the Jesuit order after its arrival in the 1571 to build this church.

Right next to the temple is the premises of the University San Antonio Abad, wich originally served as a location for the University of San Ignacio de Loyola. After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, the place served as military headquarters where Túpac Amaru II suffered prison.

To have this beautiful view you can visit the Limo restaurant and take a picture from its balcony.
