Back Bar Models

Back Bar Models Kits and detail parts of (mostly) NZR protoypes designed with a high level of detail Who is Back Bar Models?

Some of you may know me as Rick Schreuder, an Auckland modeller with an interest in 1900's era NZR as wel as some European prototypes. The models you see on this page are the result of some CAD drawing I have done in my spare time. Although most models centre around the 1900's era, most kits have options to allow the modeller to model most versions of a prototype over the years, some lasting into the Diesel era. I'm adding new stuff all the time so don't forget to check in every now and then

To start 2025 with some great news, the L kits are finally here! It has been a long journey to get to this point, which I'm sure will be worth the wait. I will be in touch with those who have placed orders already. If you haven't, there are a couple of kits available in this batch.

For those who ordered RTR models, these will be built this year

L loco kit update.

Things have been quiet lately, but things are moving behind the scenes. For the first batch of kits all the castings are in hand, as are the etches.

Work is progressing on machining all the wheels for the loco. This is no quick task, with 60 wheels all up to machine.

Unfortunately, like a few other manufacturers, we are still waiting on parts from some suppliers that were ordered months and months ago.

Hopefully these issues will resolve themselves soon, in the meantime work continues on the wheels, which will come pre-assembled and quartered to take the tricky bits out of the kit build

We're almost ready to send out another lot of plates for etching, get in touch now if you want to order some plates for your projects!

Recently added to the collection of drawings is the distinctive A&G Price numerals. Locos produced by A&G price carried plates with a much plainer style of numerals than the plates cast by NZR workshops. Our range of plates now reflect this subtle detail to give your models that little bit of extra authenticity

It's finally here! The Cleminsons underframe variant. This is the second and last evolution of the 6-wheelers on NZR rails. This variant lasted a bit longer than the original version, and isolated or out of the way sections such as the Kaihu Valley section kept some long after they disappeared from the rest of the NZR.

A lot of time has been spent under the sole survivor of this car, measuring up and reverse engineering the changes made in preservation. The model is very faithful to the prototype, and is offered in an as-built version, or a post-1900 version with air brakes.

Because the etch takes a few tricks to assemble, it will only be offered as a ready to run model.
A fully assembled underframe will cost you $180, which will get you an all brass underframe, painted satin black with either Kadee or NZR couplers of your choice.

Things have been a little quiet here of late, but behind the scenes things are moving again.

Thanks to the Auckland Westie group, you can now give your second class cars a touch of style. We are now producing sets of Scarrett seats to order, for $15 you can equip a full car with the best detailed seats available. Sets include double, single and fixed end seats in your preferred arrangement. For the more upmarket customer, matching first class seats are being developed.

We are also still producing plates, any scale, any number. The ones below are part of a run of XL sized plates to decorate loco boxes in style.

It's plates time again! Final call to get your custom plates in on this etch. Any scale is possible. We are doing some large scale plates this round for those modelling the garden railway scales.

This gem is a full size replica that's come out of the BBM workshops and is now on its way to the customer in the UK

Remember, we also stock all the common carriage plates in 9mil scale. Here's a set painted up to finish off a commission.

The easiest way to get a 2 colour plate in any scale is to airbrush the colour for the raised surfaces first in a gloss enamel or laquer, let that cure for a day or two, then painting the plate black. While the paint is soft but not wet wipe the raised bits clean with a fine rag stretched across your finger with a little turps

A new castings with standard NZR fittings is now available. The casting is perfect for upgrading the fittings of many of the existing kits out there, with finely detailed whistles in four variants, NZR firehole door, check valves and the elegant lubricators that were fitted to practically every loco running before 1900. Many of the little locos kept the lubricators until the end of steam, like this stunning example on F 180

The casting is available for $8, though there is limited stock until Auckland drops to L2.

Life's more interesting on six wheels, at least we think so. With that we introduce the next in our line of 31' cars, the Cleminsons underframe.

These lasted a bit longer than the earlier undeframes, and were the mainstay of the Kaihu Valley Railways' carriage fleet for a while. Unlike the earlier types, these cars had a clever mechanism to align the wheels to follow the curves in the track. One example survives, though heavily modernised, at the GVR. A lot of time had gone into painstakingly reverse engineering that underframe in the digital world to how it was in NZR service so that the kit is as accurate as it can be.

The first test etch of the underframe works well and does exactly what the real thing does. The castings for the kit are well in well in hand, and a revision of the etch will allow the average modeller to end up with a nicely working underframe in a couple of evenings

There may be an opportunity to buy a couple of ready to run underframes or complete C cars in the near future. If you would like one, hit the message button or email [email protected]

When we say we're the plate specialists, that's not just a token slogan. We are pretty stoked some genuine BBM plates now grace two 1:1 locomotives!

Orenstein & Koppel 1411, better known as Bertha, came to NZ with some pretty distinctive makers plates. They dissappeared well before preservation, one rumour being they were flung off Portland wharf during WW1 in some anti-German sentiment. Another MOTAT loco, the Oberursel, has also had replicas of it's missing plates made.

The plates are made in a similar way to the etched plates we produce. Photos of original plates are traced letter by letter in CAD. Instead of using these to etch the model form, they were turned into 3D models. The 3D prints made from those were used as patterns and sand cast, polished and painted.

We are now a week away from doing a run of etched plates, if you need a set for your loco get in touch now.
