Over 2 years ago, I took the first step in reclaiming my language through music and was given the opportunity to write my first song in Te Reo Māori.

Initially, I was overwhelmed with self-doubt. The experience uncovered past traumas around Māori identity that I didn't expect. One of the many reasons why this song took so long to release. But when my daughter Māhina was born, it became about being a voice for her.

I am deeply grateful for the support of my cousins who helped translate what I was feeling at the time. Writing music in Te Reo Māori, especially with whanau, is one of the most uplifting and spiritual experiences of my musical career so far.
