Hello David,
I did the testing on my phone and it does appear that it works through the mobile phone's web browser, as opposed to the app, but the app can also come in handy once the photos have been identified and added to their accounts.
It does appear that there is a "Whoops!" message after you input the selfie, but this does not hinder the system from working, as I believe it is then starting to search for the photos. Your users can then go back to the QR code to continue browsing the photos until they receive an e-mail that their matches have been found.
Please note: Ideally, having your users utilize their e-mail addresses for this process will most likely be ideal, as them using an international number might cause the system some difficulty in getting the SMS over to them. I have attached a video of this process and it seems that the individual I used as my selfie was able to get the matches very quickly.
